Opening act: Notes To Self (Group)

DJ Dopey (2003 DMC World DJ Champ) is apart of Notes to Self... hopefully they'll give him a nice long turntablism solo.

CKLN Presents
TALIB KWELI
With Special Guests Notes to Self and DJ Jr Flo

Born and raised in Brooklyn, the rapper's first name, Talib, is an Arabian name meaning "The seeker or student" while his last name, Kweli, is a Ghanaian name meaning "of truth or knowledge." With such an ambitious name, it's no surprise that Talib Kweli has made the transition from resounding underground success to critically acclaimed major-label artist.

Inspired by his studies, Kweli found himself drawn towards well-thought-out rap music such as the late '80s Native Tongue movement in New York. Artists such as De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest were grooving positive rhymes over jazzy beats and Kweli felt a connection. Soon, he would find his own success with the underground rap label Rawkus Records, releasing several well-received 12"s and singles. Talib Kweli's first taste of mainstream success came with the major-label release of his stellar debut with Mos Def as Black Star in 1998. Since then, Kweli has been one of hip hop's most exceptional and consistent artists. His 2000 release, Reflection Eternal, was one of the most acclaimed albums of the year. In 2002, a string of smash singles, including "Get By," made Quality a landmark recording and scored Kweli his second gold album. Subsequent records in 2004 (The Beautiful Struggle) and 2005 (Right About Now) cemented his status as an influential voice in the politics of hip hop.

Now, Kweli is ready to launch his newest effort, Ear Drum, the first album released on his own Blacksmith Music label and his sixth album overall. From pounding drums to minimalist grooves, Ear Drum delivers powerful music that will spark your intellect and make your body move. Kweli's superbly cerebral lyricism is always on point, exploring relevant topics while distinctively innovative production keeps the record flowing. Featuring guest producers and artists such as DJ Hi-Tek, Kwame, Madlib, Jean Grae, UGK and Norah Jones, the lyrically and sonically potent Ear Drum demonstrates that strong, powerful messages can serve as the backbone for music at its best.

"The vast majority of my subject matter focuses on black self-love, black self esteem, black self worth," Kweli says. "That translates to other communities because if you're a human being, it doesn't matter what color you're talking about. You've been through some sort of struggle and you can apply it to your own life."
