wassup all y'all TA dj's. i am in need of a new computer so i was gonna go out and get one but before i do i had to run this by ya. i was wondering what kind of software and hardware i would need in order to run my tables into my computer to record myself mixing and produce cd's. can it be done? what equipment would i need? what is the estimated cost? any info would be of great help. thnx.

Well... this is what I do:
1. I get a MD-player and connecting its input to the output of the mixer(most mixers got more than one output source).
2. Than after I finish my set (after a lot of time and effort) I simply connect the output of the MD-player (if it doesn`t have one try the head-phone line) to the input of the computer... (most sound cards have that)
3. After this part get a software capable of recording really
long tracks (like a 80 minute track) according to the space
available on your hard-drive... I personally recommend the
software "sound forge" (and get the full one...)
4. with this software you can record your set right into the hard drive and even edit it as you wish... and remember... it takes a lot of patience to record and edit/separate every track as you want your
set to be heard

If you got yer puter near your decks (like me) you can also run a mixer out directly into the soundcards line in. less recording means less quality loss!
i use cooledit96 btw i love it

I agree with pjotr G. most mixers have a recording output...... so it's very easy to connect your mixer directly to your PC and record a "live" act.
try what Pjotr G told you. beleive me. it's the best way. and about the recording software, I would definatly recommend Sound Forge. peace out...... and good luck!!!!

I use a minidisc player to record and then send it to my computer afterwords...quality is still right on.

I uas Sound Forge 5.0 works like a dream...plus you can adjust the levels to make your mix sound more professional.

thnx for the replies. alright so sound forge 5.0 seems like the way to go for software. and i just connect the mixer to the computer. screw the receiver huh? so mixer should have a recording out and there should be an audio in on the computer? i'm computer illiterate so you'll have to bear with me. what kind of sound card should i get? when i bought the pentium 100 that i got 6 years ago the best sound card was sound blaster 16. so what's top o' the line now? or what's greatest quality, but most affordable? how much are minidisc recorders and which is a good one to buy? sorry to ask so many questions but i'm sure you understand. we all take our music seriously. once again thnx for your help.

about the soundcard, I use a Sound Blaster 128 PCI. it has good quality and it's very affordable.

the SB 128 has only 3 plugs: one for speakers, one for mic, and one line in (where you plug your mixer into) so it has a very simple look....... so you don't have to be a genius in computers just to plug in your mixer...........
anywayz, that's my suggestion.

and about the MD recorder, try to get the Sony MZR-70. it's very affordable thease days, and it has great quality, too. it is the best selling MD player of all times........ but I hink they stopped selling it. so if you can't get that model, get the MZR-90.... it's even better, but it's probably more expensive...... oh well....

your computers really slow .....Get a Creative labs SoundBlaster Live 5.1......or just a MP3 Live......only like $100 +

if you have your mixer near your PC I wouldn't recommend a MiniDisc.
Pjotr G is really right here. MiniDisc DOES sound good, but it uses audio compression so there IS quality loss. And why do that if you don't have to.
For recording I can also recommend Steinberg's Wavelab.
