another question from curious george....

when you guys are going to do a set how many records do you take with you? do you load your crate cuz you don't know what's gonna happen or do you have a pre-planned set so you only take those records with a few extras? also are your sets/mixes pre-planned prior to the event? for example, if you have to do a show this saturday, would you pull some records and get a set down before the show and then play that set or would you just grab a bunch of vinyl off the shelf, take it with you, and mix it up? also what do you do if you were planning on mixing a certain set and the dj's ahead of you already play that piece of vinyl? just curious as to how it goes. it seems that just grabbing vinyl and mixing it there is the best way to go cuz who knows what the crowd is gonna be like. but not being the best at beatmatching i would be more inclined to go for something safe. that's probably why i'm still a bedroom dj with no intention of changing that scene up til i feel more comfortable.

The way I see it, you're going to take a crate anyway to carry your records, even if you only take 20 or so. So why not just fill it up and then you have the option?

I don't think you should ever play a pre-planned set, unless it's for a mix CD or something like that. You never know what the crowd will be like, what they are going to respond to, etc. Part of being a great DJ is reading the crowd and sensing what will make them go off. If you only have 20 vinyls in your box and have already played your floor killers, what are you going to do?

eugene... i've only played small parties for friends and i usually grab as much vinyl as i can cuz i just go with the vibe.

i was just curious as to general consensus.

Always take as many records as possible. The whole point of a DJ is to make the crowd happy, not yourself. During the first part of the set you can see how the crowd will act, then you will know exactly how to respond... no one said it was easy....how many Van Dyk's and Oakenfold's do you see running around... =)

agree with the others, I never plan a whole set. Sometimes I plan an intro with the first two records, but from there it's all spontaneous.
The smallest amount of records I ever had with me was 40 at Loveparade. I was only supposed to play 30 min, and carrying a case around is a pain in the A** and dangerous, too. So I stuffed 40 recs in a bag...ended up spinning for 90 min, and played 36 of those records, one twice. It was cool, I had chosen just the right ones. But for "normal" parties I will bring at least 100 records.

I usually load up my crate with all my fav's....and then once I get to the party...I feel out the vibe and play accordingly!

Even though I know most of my music inside and out (especially my favorites), if I just grab a crate of records and try to randomly mix what I thought would be a great next song, sometimes I come across two records that just DO NOT mix well. And then there's nothing you can do because the song is coming close to the finish. What do you do in this situation?

Do you know right off the bat when you throw down a tune and start beatmatching it that it won't work and immediately look for an alternative song? What if you realize too late?

I haven't spun @ BIG parties or anything, but I beleive thats the point of practicing!

If you practice, you try different mixes and see how they work, and you get the ear for which mixes may or may not work.

And you take as many records as you think you need.
