Been reading about those who change from vinyl to cds and want to play songs they own on the new cds and blah blah

Well I don't think I'll ever give up vinyl - I also know that you should never to say never

Well, what if someday (maybe in 5 years to be hypothetic) I do buy a DVDJ or whatever we've got by then. Well by then maybe, just maybe some of my records don't sound so good (more probably than not eventhough I treat them good). You could say by then todays music will be old and suck.... riiiightttt then I'd ask you "where's your head at" (pun intended )

So, I'll just go ahead and backup all my records onto wav files. It'll take a while; yes. I'll have to bakcup in CDs (luckily I've got a DVD burner at work) cos we're talking about a few GBs. But hey, vinyl is expensive and its not like I wanna downgrade to a mp3 quality song when I go digital or just wanna replace a f'ed up record.

For those of you like me who never considered it, well, just a thought...

You don't have to abandon vinyl altogether. Use both! CD's give you more freedom to manipulate the song. The song quality shouldn't be that big of a deal if you get a quality 192kbps mp3.

PVD made a good point once about people who say that mp3 sounds inferior:

All EDM is digital when it is produced so even though it is pressed on vinyl, its still digial and thus sampled just like mp3's. Back way back when when music (think rock in the 60's and 70's) was analog and then press to vinyl it was truly analog and not sampled anywhere in the process.

erm, i think you have misinterpreted that. 192kbps mp3 is not even close to CD quality under a good system or when you turn it up. And PvD definately did not say mp3 sounds the same, he was talking about digital and analog being the same because music is essentially made digitally and converting to analog (on vinyl) doesnt increase its quality. By 'digital' pvd definately did not mean mp3 192 or any compressed, true digital is uncompressed cd quality wave.

And to the thread starter, definately do not compress your ripped vinyls. Leave them in uncompressed wave.

before i got my basic setup, i wanted to dj on cdjs...figured it was easier getting songs and cheaper. how wrong i was...after spinning with vinyl, i must say i love it. the feel, the control you have its amazing. I picked up a denon s-1000 a while back, and its great...but i still love using my 1200s. I'll use cds when needed, but i'll do whatever it takes to own a track on wax.

I did say I'm storing wav files.

But my point was not about CDs, mp3s or using any. It was about not losing a good quality song purchased in vinyl in the long run after many plays. Eventually the records may(actually, Will) lose quality. So by then its to late to digitize. Even if I never go digital, I'll most likely miss that song if I my record ever fks up. If I do go digital, I don't wanna buy it again. By storing'em now I secure my investment.

^ Yes, you are correct... you should start archiving your vinyls. While you're at it, can you archive my 850 viyls too?

I have started to archive mine.... both the .wav and then I compress to 320 KBPS mp3 via LAME.

PS. I think PVD stores the songs he uses for FS as uncompressed AIFF files (lossless).

+1. i spin vinyl religiously, but i do have some of same tracks burned in wave to cds. when i spin on radio shows or just for fun i like to edit the tracks with looping/cutting by having one in a cdj and one on vinyl. makes life more interesting.
