Hi people, i will be buying my 1st set of decks soon to learn how to beatmatch.

Can someone please explain 'torque' to me, and if it's important on decks, if u just wanna beat-match.

And also, what does 'wow and flutter' mean?

i might not be right about this stuff, but this is what i know...

torque is basically how much power the deck's motor can provide to the deckplate. this is important in terms of startup time, how long the deckplate takes to go from resting to full speed, and also how stable it will be while you're backspinning and cueing a record. if the deck has a lot of torque, then while you have your hand on the vinyl, trying to cue it up and beatmatch it, will the deckplate continue to spin under the slipmat at nearly full speed, or will it slow down and stop completely after a few seconds? one of the reasons that the tech 12's are the best decks is because their motors are so powerful and have so much torque that they will just keep spinning, barely affected by even rough backspinning and cueing. the more torque your deck has, the better.

and 'wow & flutter' basically is how good the pitch control is. if a deck has a lot of wow and flutter, then the record is likely to drift off pitch frequently and this makes beatmatching a living hell. again, techs are awesome because their wow & flutter is 0.01% (i think) -- that's barely any pitch variance.

btw: buy direct drive decks!!!

Well you are right, Techs are the best decks, but not because they have the more torque than any other deck, They have 1.5 kg·cm, which is lower than my PT-2100's that are at 2.2. It is the way that the Technics motor works to CONSTANTLY keep it at 1.5. I dunno what it is about the Techs motor but to this day no company has been able to match it. The new Numark TTX1's have 3.5 or something like that of torque.

The techs are just a dream to mix on. they got a good amount of torque (all you need really), and amazing Pitch control...

However, if you aren't looking at DJing for the rest of your life I wouldn't run out and drop 1400+ dollars (Canadian) on Techs... Buy mine instead

They have 3.7k to be exact and they are gonna be bringing out another deck that are exactly like the TTXs but will have either 4.5k or 4.7k, dunno for sure, to me though thats way to much torque for beatmatching DJs, scratch Djs might like it, but I have also read some scratch DJs that didn't like the huge torque, the Techs motor is amazing and easy to control, its got just the right amount for most DJs, as for the TTXs and some other decks that have high torque motors, I'm scared to use them, I'll go to slow the platter down and I'll either burn my finger with friction, or it will just rip my finger right off, not dissing the TTXs, its all upto the individual, some people might prefer lower end decks cos thats all they need, to each there own.

That's the difference between startup torque (initial spin) and sustained torque (all the time). Most companies give the startup torque cuz it's higher, and in a commercial point of view it looks more impressive. Techs have 1.5 kg/cm sustained torque.
Same goes for the Numarks, the 3.7 or 4.5 kg/cm (on the newer models, they are already out some time now) is startup torque. Only thing with those is that the sustained torque is still bigger than the Techs also (I'd say 2.5 something like that).

About wow and flutter, people always use them as one term, while it are in fact two similar problems, but with a distinct difference.
Wow is a low speed variation of the rotation speed (and so on records, pitch also), while flutter is a high speed instability of the rotation speed. Flutter is generally more audible. Generally spoken, a deck is decent if it's less than 0.3%, yet lower is better of course.

Hmmm... seems that the gemini xl 300s im gettin dont even have a torque rating, and the wow and flutter is "less than 0.20%". Overall, pretty shit decks but they'll have to do for now...
