Angry Recording from decks in SoundForge

Hi everyone,

I have just purchased a new computer with integrated sound card and Windows XP SP2 on it. I have loaded Sound Forge 7 onto my machine, and have my turntables connected through my mixer into the line-in plug.

However, I am getting some odd results. In the recording screen of Sound Forge, the VU meters which show the sound levels of the recording track, never go above 0db.

My old computer used to show me "CLIP" when ever it pushed above 0db, making it very easy to work out if I was pushing too much signal into the line-in port. On the new computer, I have no idea how loud or how much clipping is going on (until I turn the mixer up to "full" and can audibly hear clipping - yet still SoundForge is telling me the levels are at 0db).

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling SoundForge. I've even tried an older version! I have updated the soundcard drivers and then switched from using the integrated sound, I went and purchased a new SoundBlaster Live and got exactly the same results.

It's like this computer has some sort of input DB limiter on it, be it software or hardware.

Has anyone come across this problem before, or can give me any pointers to fix it???

Thanks!!
Aurora2

thats a curious problem. ive never really used soundforge, but have you checked through soundforge's options to see if there is an option to normalise recording inputs? if so, untick it and re-do your levels. if there isn't it might be worth having a scan through your recording level settings in windows.

other than that, try cool edit pro 2. it has nice clipometers that stay red until you reset them.

I have the exact same problem. I just started using soundforge a week or two ago with my laptops integrated sound card, and it always says that it clips no matter how much I turn down the signal(aside from being completely silent). I didn't really mind it because I couldn't hear any actual clipping in the recordings and I thought sourceforge was just saying it.... then one day I recorded a nice set, and then when I went to look at the sound files window, it was solid blue.

You had to know you were gonna get this response....

Don't touch a metal part then!

Sounds like you have a grounding problem somewhere.

i have an integrated sound card and i don't have this problem, i don't use soundforge. there must be some option somewhere in the program, where its either boosting input signals or something similar. try using a different program to record, if it still does the same then its nothing to do with soundforge..

i know line-in inputs can be touchy with the volume controls, i usually only have it up maximum 1/4 the way up the slider on the windows controls.. any further volume is supplied by either my amp or mixer, its much more precise.
