always keep an eye on the VU meters at the top, one is the input level, and one is the output level. if you notice it getting too loud just turn down the output level slowly.
the reason your mini breakdowns are sounding too loud is perhaps because you have the depth set too high. it is a very fine line with echo, and can work in many different ways as sometimes you want the depth right up to gain the effect you want (i.e. looping with effect). you might also want to try using the isolator switches (eq's) to take the bass off when you do the little breakdown, then kick it back in when you want to kick the track back in, always compensate a little by crankin the mids up a tiny bit). this means less frequencies will get through to the effects unit and in turn make it quieter (kind of like when you use the eq's when mixing, if you have both basslines in at full whack, it sounds too loud).
i think i am good with an efx500, but i wish i was zabiela drop him an email or read the inlay of his compilations.. he narrates every little thing he does, which is cool!
