sound proofing questions

I live in an apartment block and my neighbours always complain and shit so much so that the fun in mixing has almost completely disappeared. I have this huge cupboard (for futon beds) in my room and i was wondering if i bought some sound proofing foam and covered the five sides of the cupboard would that dull the sound out alot so that it didnt quite reach into the other apartments.... or do you really need to have 6sides covered i.e. a completely sealed room?

cheers for any suggestions

if the neighbours are above or below, you should be able to get away with just proofing the ceiling or floor, although this can prove quite difficult, and will involve raising the floor by 2 inches, or lowering the ceiling by 2 inches. with regards to proofing a cupboard, it all really depends on where the neighbours are in relation to you. if you have the cupboard against the wall which they are next to, it will dampen the sounds a little but not really to the extent you want, as sound will just bounce back off the wall behind you and end up going around the cupboard.

your best bet is to cover the entire wall to be honest, you will get much better accoustics and it will do a better job of dampening. sound proofing is very expensive though, make sure you really need to do it before buying the panels as they cost a bomb for decent stuff.

Here's an older thread on soundproofing:

Take a look at this site too:
http://www.domesticsoundproofing.co.uk/help.htm

In short, it prob won't be cheap to do real effective soundproofing

It's normally the bass that gets the others annoyed, and foam isn't going to help that. You need mass to get rid of bass, not egg cartons/foam/etc etc. So I second the response that the cheap soundproofing foam won't really help at all.

Maybe some sort of 'bass-trap' will help you.
