I currently make music with FL Studios 5 and Apple Garageband, which sometimes I used premade loops that were in the software to begin with... My question is, once I make the music and compile it, etc, do I retain the copyright to that song? If not, then why do such software exist?

Depends if the loops are copyright free or not.
i would imagine that if they were bundled in with it, then they are- so yes.
At any rate- even if the samples were not copyright free (therefore owned by someone else), the melody, arrangement and everything else WOULD be owned by you.

yes you do, any sample or loop you can buy is royalty free once you own it.

btw, do you have 2 computers? FL studio isnt mac compatible and garageband wont work on PC.

Yeah it's two computers, one G5 mac and a Pentium-M laptop...

Most are (hence the high price of sample cds) but some are not.

There you go- not copyright free.

it doesnt look as if you can use the bundled samples for commercial releases. anyway's its the main melody that you need to worry about with copyright and i doubt there are any useable melodies bundled... other than the melody, a very original bassline or querky beat could be copyrighted but again i doubt there are any bundled with the program. with regards to drum/bass/synth samples: i doubt a 4;4 kick sample would stand up in court as a breach of copyright(unless it was from system f-out of the blue)


imo i think prebundled samples are a surefire way of holding back creativity if used too much and are just provided to play when you get the software for the first time. they re never that great...

i guess your probably just using kicks etc so i recon you ll be fine as far as copyright is concerned.

If you purchase a sample cd say "Vengeance Club Sounds Vol1" you will soon find many pro producers use this sample cd and will find its samples in many pro tracks, so there is nothing to worry about, just check what you are buying first though
