Look no further than the B52 Matrix 1000 system. They revised it reciently to make it "better", but i have a friend that has two of those setups for mobile gigs. I've always heard him sing praises about how great the package is especially for under $1000. And this is someone who also uses a pair of 15" eon G2s as well (i haven't heard him talking about using those anymore btw). And when i had a chance to give those a listen, i found the bass to be very punchy but not muddy, and mids and highs seem pretty good too. Believe me, I want one, but i just don't have the space or need...

Woah calm down... Like all speakers/headphones, give em a listen before spending big bucks. What i may like someone else may hate. Even though i really like the Matrix 1000, i still think Mackie srm-450s sound way better overall with the exception of bass extension. I personally use srm-450s on a weekly basis for PA/live music and to be honest, between the two for the use i would go for the mackie. However, their $1400 a pair and won't nearly have as much bass as the matrix setup. But for when im at home chillin and playing with my decks, i like the deep in your chest bass the matrix provide. For fun value the matrix provides better than the Mackies, for accuracy value thats good for pa the mackies are better imo (i have somewhat limited experience with the Matrix b/c i never used them personally at a gig and i never used them for live pa, however like i said, my friend absolutely luvs his over his jbl eons, and they've seen many mobile dj gigs, i just haven't had the chance to give them a side by side face off with the mackie srm-450s for pa use)

yeah that B52 matrix 1000 is a very sweet setup, the sub isnt as "tight" as i like, but for the money that thing is loud and clear. you might also wanna consider goin with the mackie SRM350 or SRM450. the 450s put out a shitload of bass for not having a sub and are active so the amp is built in. i think these are some of the cleanest sounding sound renforcement monitors.

I wouldn't say the srm-450s put out that much bass, i would say they're very balanced for an active monitor. I think the Eon 15G2 puts out more bass overall. But honestly, i love the srm450s i use and i wish i can take them home to have and to love.

Interesting topic...I myself am debating over a system under $1500...

Dj chex would you say that the SRM450's with an additional sub would definitely out beat the B52 setup?

I mean I have $800 to spend for the B-52. But if the SRM450's are THAT much clearer at $1400 for the pair... I’d rather save up and purchase them for their quality to benefit me in the long run, and add an additional sub for bass to complete it.

I actually like both... It's hard to say. They both seem to work very well for their intended purposes. It's easy to say the Mackie setup with sub will be superior to the b52, however, for $800 it's hard to beat the b52. For the price of the mackies and a good sub, the price will be over double that of the matrix1000. Plus, i haven't heard the revised matrix 1000v2 yet. All i know is it's suppose to have a better horn, amp, and crossover, and if it's indeed improved overall, it must sound great, however, i really can't make any judgements on which sounds better without hearing the new version; but i'm sure b52 did a great job improving it.

awsome thanks alot, I definitely have to give them both a listen and see whats up, this B52 has been getting alot of positive reviews.. and for $800 i'd rather get that and save the money for other gear.

There is also a B52 MATRIX 2000 .. you think this would be an over kill?

I went the "el-cheapo" way with a couple of 15 inch PA speakers on tripod stands (and an external amplifier which I already had). Initially I liked it but now I find it just doesn't sound right. There isn't enough bass, and the clarity isn't there with the plastic cabinets (wood is better). You get what you pay for.

Either the B52 Matrix 1000, or the Mackie 450 optionally with subs would be very nice. The Mackie 450 although it uses a plastic cabinet has very good sound, although needing a sub depending on the situation.

Think about the the size and weight of the speaker system if you need to move it with a small car. The B52 or any system with a subwoofer won't fit in many small cars.

Just got back from guitar center, I listened to:

1) B52 Matrix 1000v2
2) B52 Matrix 2000
3) Mackie SRM450 (mono) << they only had one srm450 for demo

Well to begin, the 1000v2 is out of the picture.. because mainly the bass THUMP in the 2000 just knocks away the 1000.

But seriously, even listening to the SRM450 in mono, the clarity and strength of that speaker was ridiculous... I can only imagine two SRM450's going at it...

The 2000 had a shit load more bass and thump then the SRM450's... but the quality and high's was definitely much better on the Mackies (even listening to just ONE SRM450)...

So I would love to hear if SRM450 owners are happy with the speakers? Because I am now really looking to get a pair..

although i have never heared any b-52 boxes i would recommend the srm450's. they are by far the best value powered sound reinforcement in this size range. of all the small gigs i have ever heared the only ones that sound really nice are ones with srm's being used. however they only use a 12" bass driver. this is better for quality in the mid range but will struggle when you get asked to play a night any bigger than 100 people. the bass just wont be enough... check out makies 15" version. it aint much more expensive and will give you a lot more headroom if you need it. only problem is that they weight a lot more...
