Radio DJing

so yeah just a quick question about DJing on a radio station. My main question is what the hell do u do about tracks and stuff. Normally at a live gig if the crowd isnt feeling a song, u just change it, but its almost impossible to tell on the radio unless people call in saying its crap for somereason, so what do you do?

People who don't know what to do don't usually play.

I think you should talk to your music director/program director. They have a better idea of what they want for your show. After all, they're the ones that can and will cancel you if your rating suck. Talk to them.

I don't get it, you got the gig. So didn't you get it because of a particle style you are expected to play?

You're right, you don't know how many people will turn off if you play a certain tune, but most people will be listening in the car, or just have it on in the background so they're normally willing to sit through quite a few records they don't like before they'll turn it off, maybe they'll just leave it on anyway... a lot of the time it's more hassle to change the station than just stick listening to what they normally listen to.

But radio's much more about presenting some music than trying to please a crowd. People who like your show will tune in, people who don't won't. You can add to the appeal with competitions, guest mixes etc.

Have a think about why you listen to a radio show, what keeps you listening etc. It varies from person to person, I personally don't listen to a lot of radio but when I do it's normally in the car and I'll just pick a station and stick with it for the whole journey (I'm not picky enough to swap station every few songs to try and find something I might like more!)

At our station here we are cleared to play whatever we want as long as it follows Pacifica (no profanity in a nuthsell) and the genre of music for the hour (urban, jazz, electronic, etc). On the hour we have a station ID which the dj or host chimes into provide.

We are also supposed to announce the weather and PSAs but we don't. The reason being is that the show is from midnight to three so the rules get bent, a lot.
