Is this ok?

Got my new mixer today, the behringer djx700 (to replace the broken one) from a first gig that went sour. And I'm a little concerned/paranoid but for some reason when i turn it on.. the levels are risen a little across all 4 channels..

The last time i saw the old mixer do this, It was busted and making crackling noises and carrying on..

Is it ok? Could it be the amp? It's a pretty old and dodgy amp.. Does the trick for the bedroom setup until i can afford a new proper amp and finally take full power of my 2x 15" party speakers

Which won't be far off now since i got employed (Woot!) But yeah.. If this isin't normal please let me know asap. It dosen't seem to make any weird noises or anything otherwise.. I just did a mix on it .. works fine.

btw, by 'risen' i mean about -10 (about 4 green bars constant) .. But if you guys say thats normal then cool.. And yes, I'm aware of Behringer being evil however since i'll be raking in the $$ with the new job I'm suspecting a Xone mixer on my desk any day now..

It's been said so many times, but...

"Friends" don't let "friends" buy Behringer.

agreed. I have a friend who bought one against my advice and he's just put out more money for a djm 400 (after 3 months). I say return that thing if you can.

It is ok. But just incase, the proper way to turn on a set up is in this order.

1.- CD Players/Turntables/Effects Machines (Anything connected into the mixer)
2.- Mixer
3.- Sound Processors (EQ's, Compressors, etc as long as they are connected after the mixer and before the amps.)
4.- Amps
5.- Powered Speakers

To turn off a sound system, do it in reverse order.

Ta, never knew it was important but i'll start doing it in that order now that i do..

Relax behringer haters.. This thing isin't staying.. It's merely a cheap alt for the next few weeks until i have the dough for a Xone mixer.

What if you power up the mixer without anything connected?

If it's showing levels without connections, I'd consider it suspect.

Otherwise, plug things in one by one, of course with your speakers turned all the way down so you dont blow something up, and see when the noise starts.

You might have DC on the line somewhere, alot of the cheaper mixers aren't properly DC bypassed and will show DC as a signal level, but it's not audible. It's a voltage, so it'll move meters, level lights, etc, but doesn't alternate so it makes no noise.

with nothing else connected it dosen't seem to have a problem, but once i turn on the cdjs and start mixing.. the levels just sit at -20 across all channels.. no noises though.. just music.
