I've actually never seen a real DJ set

I've seen pics and all, but I have absolutely NO idea what it's like to DJ. I have no idea like...does Armin van Buuren just mix songs and sounds or does he make his own? I have 0 idea on what is going on. Yes I've been to parties etc. (infact, I work at a club as bartender) but I've never seen a real DJ set up close and played it cuz the DJ packs before I'm finished cleaning or I leave before the party ends cuz I have school the next day!! My friend had one, but we always ended up playing guitar and drums (cuz he played the drums, I played guitar) when I went to his house!

So anyways, someone give me a rundown on what goes on in the DJ set, if you can with pics. Hell, a video wouldn't be too bad. lol. Use common language.

Sry for this question, it just pisses me off how I'm really into the music yet have no idea how it's made.

For example. If I wanted to start out with a very limited budget, what are the essential things I would need? Give me full names, numbers, and letters, cuz I actually have NO clue. I wanna staaaaaaaaaaaaaart! lol.

Which is it that you want to start? In your question you sort of blur the lines between DJing and producing, which are two different things.

At a very simplified level, DJing is mixing together records, or tracks/songs that have been finished.

Producing is the art of making said tracks/songs.

Advice: get a clue before you decide if you want to start mixing or not.

Oh ok, so wait. Let's use an example here. Say...I make a track, then I mix it with another one. That is: I produced a song, then mixed the song with an already existing song that I didn't produce?

If that's right, then right now, I guess producing, cuz it's more creative in a way. Mixing sounds easier, I'm probably wrong on that though .

Listen man, I'm not here to fight, I'm here to get a clue, as you said. What do you think this place is for?

Djs who are more producers are usually guys like DJ Shadow who use other's records and "samples" from them which then he uses to create tracks. Lots of famous hip hop DJs do this. With trance DJs, they may do some post-production or may do loops, mash-ups, or even some live remixing, but they really don't create music when DJing, just mixing tracks like already said. But many are producers as well, and play many of their own productions in their sets.

So Armin van Buuren's track "Slipstream" is a production, right?

PS: I'm not into hip-hop DJing at all.

I'm just trying to understand how you could already be convinced that you want to start DJing without having a clue as to what it entails.

To put it simply.

DJ: Plays and mixes tracks together for a party etc.
They get cds/vinyls and match the speeds in bpm (beats per minute) then fade between the tracks (Simply).

Producer: Writes music and produces music in a studio.

Why are people being such assholes? I mean, I get it's a very very very simple question to you guys, but come on, ever try starting something but don't know how or where to start from? I'm just asking for advice from the pro's here.

If you guys weren't good at making sigs and wanted to start doing it badly, then I'd be glad to help and I wouldn't act like an ass, so please, help out instead of making these comments.
