I think he means that when you pitch a track up or down (speed up/slow down), the key is altered as well (on a TT).
In ableton, yes it's fully capable of changing the pitch without affecting the key. There are even several different algorithms you can choose from to do this.
This is akin to the "key lock" or "master tempo" feature on CDJ's, Serato, Traktor, etc.
Pitching a track up or down on a TT does change the key a BIT, but you have to make really really big pitch changes for it to make a huge difference.
If you want to permanently alter the key of an entire track by semi-tones, yes it'll sound like poo. Big time. Don't do it.
Harmonic mixing is a tool, not a rule (hey that rhymes!). You can mix two tracks that aren't in compatible keys and it can sound totally fine.
Use harmonics as a guide, but in the end:

thanks guys
yeah in mixmeister you can move the key in semitones up or down and it sounds funny, but you can click turntable mode and it sounds fine, i tested this last night and he mixes sounded perfect and the key was changed and the bpm was in in sync with the master

Yeah 1 or 2 is usually fine, go beyond that and eak.
