One of my records wobbles when played; this is plainly visible to me on the turntable. At this point I don't know if it's a warped vinyl or incorrect anti-skate/counterweight settings.

Needless to say, I find it extremely difficult to beatmatch this record.

What can be done to remedy the situation?

i have a record like this 2
i tried putting it under about 200 records for a week but that didnt help, i find if i bend it a bit before i use it, its better but still not normal. Otherwise u just have to be really carefull when nudgeing it and dropping it in, or use the pitch to mix then u should be ok.

here is what a closet DJ (who was just featured in BPM magazine!!) told me...

he said to get 2 pieces of glass and put the vinyl in between the glass. Set it out in the sun and let it sit there for a while (the temperature has to be real HOT). THen it should fix that problem. Before you take it out, you should let the vinyl cool down. Supposedly it also doesnt screw up the grooves on the record.

And here's my home remedy which i'm doing as we speak (it's gay but whatever this record is only 5.99). Get one of those hot lamps. I set the vinyl on a flat surface (right now it's on my CD book). Then i turn on the lamp and aim it at the vinyl fairly close. Then I set a book one one side and put something else on the other side to flatten it. Surprisingly after 3 hours of doing this, the record actually flattened out somewhat, although not the best. But at least it flattened out reasonably. Tonight i'm gonna try to get the inner portions of it to flatten out. Basically you have to use heat to flatten warped records.

Thanks for the info, but doesn't heat destroy vinyl?
I thought everyone advised to store vinyl in a cool, dark place...

if by "destroy" you mean "change the shape of the record", then yes it "destroys" the vinyl. The reason why ppl say to store it in a cool place is so it doesnt get warped or change shape. That way it stays as flat as possible. But sometimes, records warp even w/o heat, and heat is the only remedy to fix it unless u want to play warped records.

Hmmm, its a bit risky heating your vinyl up and re-shaping it.

The best way is to bend it before use and store it under records. And in future don't leave records in a position to get warped b following correct storage procedures. If it was like that when you bought it then write to the record label of the vinyl, most are happy to help in some way!

Man.... warped records piss me off. I remember that when I first started spinning, I thought I was doing something wrong or that the song just changed tempos too much..... I could not figure why the thing was so unstable... Until I noticed how the records that were like that tended to wobble ... i checked them out on a horizontal view, at a narrow view...and noticed that they were warped....
one thing though... i notice that some brand new records I have order through online stores have came warped....
I know it did not occur through the shipping, because only that one out of the whole batch came out warped, not the others..... So somewhere, some place, it got bad treatment (storage, heat, etc)....
Its very dissapointing,especially for those hard to get anticipated records. I no longer feel like playing warped records.... makes it sound like you have no skills. I trust me, i will dance with the pitch control... but sometimes the unstableness is just too unpredictable, so the records will be off beat at some point. I'm glad its not only me who shares this fustration.

Actually, I've noticed that many less records I get are warped from the store directly. They tend to be warped when ordered through online stores
However, I've seen at the local stores too, idiots setting the records flat horizontal, which is a BIG NO NO. They have their big stack at the listening booth and their records all stacked on top of each other... no consideration or ignorance. Common sense: why else would the whole records store have an arrangement of the records vertical instead of horizontal....

yeah writing the label is another alternative you can do. For me though, it's not the way to go mainly because I live in teh U.S. and i'm not that crazy about spending unnecessary shipping or anything to get a new unwarped record.

I saw at HTFR they have those record unwarper machines that supposedly fix it. heh that's yet another alternative u can look at.
