And then there is a cheaper model, which works well too, I suppose, for many headphones - this one uses 4 AAA batteries. PLUS, there's an option to plug in another pair of headphones in case your friend wants to listen in:

Those 280's look pretty beat-up: the earpads are all deformed and the cable looks like it got stretched out too far.
I've been toying with the idea of getting some sort of amp for my mp3 player as I think the sound quality could be better, but the cost seems to be prohibitive especially when it's only satisfying curiosity.
