I am sitting here and thinking, and it's doing my nut in!

How do you figure out what you spin when you like all the geners. I mean I love techno, trance, progressive, tech-trance, hard-trance. And there all these records I want to buy, but I feel like I am gonna stay in debt for the rest of my life if I continue with my spending habbits as of late.

I guess I could spin a little of everything but than, I guess it means that I am gonna be spining like the top 40 of all geners. And that kind of sucks. For example I started my collection 2 months ago and already have around 110 vinyls. yup i spent shit loads of money! I want to purchase a few classic i.e. Rank 1 - Awakenings (both remixes and original vinyls, I know they may be cheese but I love them), but I don't think that I am ever gonna spin it in public, it's more for my self. So should I shell out the money on these? or just stick to the lesser known new vinyls that will more than likely will be more usefull in the long run.

What do you think? I guess I am just lost.

I mean should I just stick to my "progressive-tech-trance" genere that I like best and let the other dj's spin all the other stuff???

I just started spinning a couple of months ago, and I feel like I'm at the same place. Is it bad to be spending all this money to build that collection that I drool over? Even at the record store, one of the guys saw my collection and was like, dude why are you buying those tracks, they arent very playable. That got me thinking. Should i try to imitate the styles of my favorite DJ's or should I go off on my own path and find new artists? Right now, its like my collection is a conglomerate of PVD style, Tiesto style, and Ferry style, and heck even some prog stuff too.

my suggestion would be....when going to the record store...try to buy a set. when at the listening booth try to piece together a mix. think to urself..."this would sound good after this other track" and so forth. weed out the tracks that you know are not going to work. this way..you'll walk out with 30-40 rekz (my spending habits may differ from yours ) that can be mixed (in any particular order)

if you're bying the vinyls for spinning, go for the genre you love most. let others spin what they want. doesn't matter what they spin. if you're bying vinyls for listening, go for the tracks you like most, genre doesn't matter.

if you're bying vinyls for both listening & spinning, buy vinyls you like in the genre you spin. but, on every 10 vinyls or so, buy one you like from another genre...

it's the best way to grow your collection & satisfy both your ears and your spinning needs...

I agree with liquid, because you don't have to stick to spinning just one genre of techno, you can spin them all as long as you can get the set to flow well. I have 3 full length cd mixes and two double disk mixes from over the past year and a half. Each cd is it's own original style and each one is its own genre too. They stick to the same basic trance style, but I've got one that is more eurotechno style, one that is epic trance and another that is more progressive. It doesn't matter what you spin, as long as the tracks that you spin during one set move with eachother. That is the most important part. Just remember, if you release an album that is progressive, that doesn't make you a progressive dj, you define who you are, not the music you spin.

Hmmmm, I kinda agree with you in the sense that picking up playable tracks is obvious, but I think if you like a track enough, you can mix it in regardless, you will somehow find a way. Since I obviosly don't share your spending habits (I walk away with 2-3 :P) I take only the tracks that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside!

ex: 4 strings - diving (cosmic gate remix) OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to buy trance, hardhouse and prog when I started off, but I eventually narrowed it down to trance, and now I mainly only buy a certain sort of trance, by which I don't mean one level of hardness, but stuff with clean production and musical sophistocation. As you buy more and more records, you eventually find that certain things become more important to you. Your style will find you, if you let it. You don't necessarily need to decide immediately. I'd keep it broad for a while, and only buy records that float your own boat, rather than other people's.

buy whatever suits you ... but do try to keep it narrowed somewhat cause the more styles the more vinyl you'll need to try to do decent sets.


concerning the buying and planning a set out .... well I don't do that.... I buy tracks which I feel are good for faster/ mellower sets, for the startup/buildup sections

try to plan accordingly .... and listen to the records over and over ... not mixing them! it's great to buildup a sense of musicalogy ( damm spelling ) and help you in your taste narrowing.

imo, only buy what u think u will spin, i made the mistake of buying vinyl i would like and did like and do like, but never spin them, unless u can actually sense yourself spinning them, give them a miss
