I've searched for a clear answer on this, and haven't found one.

Does anyone know if Traktor uses the hardware when you start record mode? Does it use the DACs of your equipment and feed back in?

It doesn't seem like it does, and is purely software-based. And, I don't see how it could anyway.

I don't have Traktor 2 yet, so I'm using version 1.

The output from hardware sounds so much better than when I review it afterword, so I think I'm answering my own question now.

Hopefully Traktor 2 doesn't suck in this department!

So you are saying the hardware does come into play? I mean with just the recording option built-in.

I figured you had to output the sound somehow in order for that to occur, but I wasn't sure how Traktor made use of the DACs.

But you're using an external card, right?

To answer both your questions, I use an external card built in to my controller. But, I was under the impression Traktor would ignore it when using the recording function within the program?

The monitor outputs don't clip nor distort, but if I run into the red on the master output meter within Traktor, the wav file will start distorting.

My thought was that it was bypassing the sound card and doing everything internally? So, it didn't matter what you were connected with. So, I don't think it's the tracks, since they don't clip, but when the gain is turned up, you can push them into that realm.

It just seems the signal path in Traktor can't use an external sound module for more than an output to another program or device? Perhaps 2.0 can?

A friend of mine is on Traktor / Xone S4 (he also buys his music). Then he knows how to do a proper master of his recordings. Cristal clear sound quality.

If you're recording internally (and I have no way of knowing if you are or not) and then you clip the channels inside traktor, then yes, your wav will be clipped. It will then sound like shit when you play it.

The answer is to not clip in traktor and have your gain staging set so that you have some headroom before you clip but that it also sounds nice on your monitors.

If you really want to get fancy you could calibrate your system to K-18, meaning that your ears would bleed before you ever clipped, but really the solution is to make sure that traktor does not clip and adjust your soundcard/controller/speakers output so it's loud enough for you.

Don't forget, even if it's a little quiet as a recording (wav) you can always just raise the volume as an offline process later.

yea dude just watch your recording volume in Traktor (you can actually be peaking the main but as long as you're not red in the recording volume you'll be good) and make sure to leave enough headroom.

I think last two posts might be what I'm referring to most.

Trying to clarify further--I was trying to find out if the hardware you're using comes into play at any point in the signal when recording within Traktor itself (using its own record function).

I don't see how, but there are hardware configs out there where that could occur. Traktor does not seem to operate that way to me, but was looking for confirmation.

I can't see where the hardware would be feeding back into the signal path in Traktor's internal record mode? None of the settings indicate as such.

The possibility was there, with its USB configuration using combo MIDI/audio controllers. That's what motivated the original question. Hopefully it's more clear, but I think I've got the answer I need.

When you set Traktor to record in the little box that also has fx unit 2, there's also a seperate volume knob for recording. if it's turned up too much your recording will clip, even if you're sending a fine signal through the master channel. watch the levels for a while when recording next time and don't be so quick and flip it over to fx unit 2, i bet the the effects on unit 1 is more than enough for playing with until the first song has built up to first peak intensity.
