Novice DJ Help

Hey guys

I am new to DJing and just bought myself a New DJ setup. 2 x Pioneer CDJ350's and a Numark M4 mixer.

I was hoping that someone could answer some questions that I have about beat matching. I just wanted to check that I've got the correct method of doing the beat matching.

For now I am using two copies of the same tune to practice. doing transitions and so on, until I get confident to movie on to two different tunes at a time. The tune is Deadmau5 - Not Exactly. I have this song loaded on both Decks.

I have a few questions that would help me out if they where answered and explained to me. It would make it much easier.

1) On what phrase of the song would I start to beat match ?? does it matter what phrase it is ??

2) Where is the best time to begin beat matching so that when the outro of the tune playing out loud starts I can have the song matched up and make the transition, as to still here the majority of the cued track live through the speakers. ? Would it be say about 1 minute before the beginning of the outro phsae, say 2 phrases - (64 beats - 16 bars) ??? But if I do this the tune that I bring in will be half over already, and I would only hear half of it through my speakers ??? I am very confused here !!

3) If I have beat matched the 2 songs together and then I re-cue the track back to the first beat. Can I bring it in on the first down beat of the outro, without having to beat mach again ?? so that I can concentrate on the transitions.?

Any Help would be awesome :)

Cheers

I don't even beat match if it sounds perfect when on synk. Sometimes it sounds good when you just hit the play button and move the beat over, right on top of the other beat so people can actaully hear what your doing and it creates a cool effect moving the beats around a tiny bit. Theres also delay that can be used to synk beats.

I think this picture might give you a better idea of the possibilities. If you don't have traktor to plug your tables into you should get it. if you can see where the beat is visually, synk it if it works better and know your songs you won't need to use headphones that often and be able to focus more on whats playing through the speakers, and eq/use effects more.

1.) It doesn't ,matter on what phase you start to beat match.

2.) If you push cue button on the player, that plays tune that you are going to drop, it will return to the 1 beat you cued. So if push play again, it will start from 1 beat.
Now if you want to do transition you described, you will do the beatmatching then press cue (track will stop playing in your headphones). Now you have to press play 2 phrases before outro. Use jogwheel to sync both tracks, and do the transition (using eq, crossfader etc).

3.)Yes, if its beatmatched then its beatmatched. But you have to be ready to use jogwheels to sync tunes, becouse for digital cd players its almost impossible to do 100% perfect beatmatch. For long transitions you have to sync tunes every 10 seconds or so.

Have Fun!
