It's right that Protools is mainly aimed to the mac world, but with a decent PC you shouldn't have too much problems running it normally.
But that doesn't mean there aren't many other options.
My main concern with protools is everything is pretty much proprietary with Digidesign. I mean, you can get a Digi 001 system, that will work good with protools, but that's it. If you use it with other systems the use won't be optimum. That's not the case with other hardware that can use ASIO for optimum settings (but then again Protools doesn't work with Asio so you won't take full advantage of that equipment either, basically to have maximum performance, you have to go digidesign all the way). I like more "open" systems.
Protools is great for audio editing, some very nice features, but I don't really like the midi part on it.
For me Logic (and lately Cubase SX) are the sequencer I use most. Again it's a matter of preference, some people like the PT interface better, some just hate it. But generally I'd say, if you go Protools, yes a Mac is better, but with other softs like Logic and such, nowadays, with the right hardware, a PC can compete with Mac without a problem.

Ya im in the process of buying a new PC. I am learning ProTools, Logic, Qbase, and Reason in my audio engineering course. I just wanted to make sure buying a PC isnt a mistake, Personaly i hate macs and i would much rather not buy one just for this course.
