theres a very famous quote by roger sanchez where he goes a good dj never touches his records which is fucking hard atm but i was just wondering how many of you guys were up to that level where you can do it all by pitch... thats pretty cool id love to do that... actually can do it a little but i find its much easier if i touch the record cause then i can keep it in line by whatever and THEN make a minor adjustment to the pitch... and if i was too do it all by pitch i might bring it too fast or slow and not be able to get it back to my original position well enough so that it trainwrecks :/ know what i mean or did i totally fuck that up ?
anyway any tips for this method?

I don't touch the record when i beatmatch, unless you count the time where i push off the record so that its on beat with the playing record. I just start the record on beat with the playing record and then figure out whether to move the pitch lower or higher.
when your first start djing this isn't always the best method to use, but eventually i think its good to getinto the habit of controling the record solely useing the pitch. when you notice that one record is getting to fast, you can move the pitch down on it and then move it back to the normal position. also by doing this you get a feel for the exact place to put the pitch slider so both the records are as beatmatched as you can make them.

I've made it a point to not touch my record at all anymore. And I've got 2 different tables so I'm learning the difference in a +10 and a +8 pitch adjustment. It's tough, but it'll pay off in the end.

Pitch only all the way. It is the only way you can be 100% certain how much you are taking off or adding. Touching brings uncertainties like stickyness of hands/record and pressure applied/added.

I learned from the start to use pitch only and it is paying off as you will never ever hear an audible pitch bend from myself or others who can utilise this technique!

It is the same either way, if you have always touched the record, then you get used to it. I touch the records and I don't worry about anything because I know the exact feel of basically all my records. I know how much a little push will affect the tune. I think its just personal preference. You can't really say there is a certain way to utilize your dj skills, thats like saying there is only one proper way to paint a picture. Everybody has their own style.

When I started out, I used to manually speed up or slow the record because I was new to beatmatching...it helped, but I noticed that adjusting the pitch gives more flexibility in terms of matching simply because it sounds more fluid...it's really hard to notice the change in sound when matching with the pitch.
But at times, your forced to use your hands to adjust...only to a certain extent though.

at first it was kinda hard.....but now its easier then it was by touching the record......it sounds better too

I've been spinning 1 year and i can beatmatch very well without touching the vinyl

I use the spindle and pitch only

not unless you're using belt drives
it's not putting any strain on the motor (if someone knows 100% otherwise, please let me know)


as for the question at hand
i touch the record

however, once i get myself a pair of tech 12s, i'm going to try the pitch method
the tables i have right now, the pitch isn't accurate enough
even with touching the record, it's hard sometimes to get it perfect
and then halfway through my mix, the pitch with waver a little bit...

makes it tough

Using the spindle does not effect the tables.

Its actually a very good compromise between the pitch method and the push method

Its not as difficult as the pitch method
and it doesn't sound nearly as bad as a push

for me this is the only way

besides fingerprints are bad for sound quality.

try it, u have to be fairly close to begin with because twisting the spindle makes less of a pitch change than a push?

this is somethign I wish i could do better, i started off learning by touching the record and now im trying to get the hang of not touching it.

its a bit weird at first but im touching the record less and less (keeps them vinyl cleaner too)
