It sounds like you might have bought the wrong thing! You need a channel splitter, not a stereo splitter. A stereo splitter splits the stereo input into two identical stereo outputs. The channel splitter should split the channels of the input, and send the left channel of the input to both channels of one of the outputs and the right channel to both channels of the other output.
The other suggestion is that you may have 3D stereo enhancement switched on for your soundcard. you need to switch this off for the splitter to work. To do this, open the volume control, click on advanced controls, and uncheck 3D stereo enhancement.
