Hi all. This is a minor, but important question. I'm about to transport my 2 CDJ-800s and DJM-600 from New York, across the country, and maybe back home to Singapore. I'm looking to buy a coffin/flight case/road-ready case. To my understanding, a coffin is simply something you put the equipment in, but may not necessarily be optimum when travelling. So therefore, what IS the difference between a flight case and a road-ready case? Should I buy one that can hold all 3 components?

I was thinking of purchasing a flight-ready case that holds all 3 because I will be flying (haha. just thought it made sense), and would not want to check in 3 different pieces. Perhaps anyone who has successfully transported his/her equipment by air would like to share the experience? Thanks.

Oh, btw, are CDJs and DJMs check-in safe (ie wont get busted by the evil x-rays that be)?

First off, checked items are not xrayed (only carry ons), that is why they check them by hand and you get a little note from the DHS (but xrays would not hurt them anyway).

I think the main thing you want to look for is that it is ATA approved to be checked. This should mean that it is strong enough to safely hold your gear. Coffins do have the advantage of being just one peice which helps for checking but make them a pain to haul (at least when you have TTs, CDJs may make like easier ).

I have never flown with my gear, just my records which I do carry on so they don't get damaged or lost. I send my gear through the mail and insure it (packaged in original boxes).

Hmmmm... I always thought they were, at least they are at Midway airport in Chicago. After you check your bags you have to bring them to another person who puts them into the massive x-ray machine. Perhaps it's different in different airports??

due to the post 9-11 security, anyone traveling with DJ equpitment will be considered a terrorist and a threat to national security. you will be detained, given a full cavity search with a roto-rooter, and incarserated for the rest of eternity.


or not. on a serious note, x-rays will not harm your gear at all. but i would recomend individual flight cases instead of a coffin. coffins are kinda big and they may not let you check them. i had this problem when i tried to fly to california wiht my surfboard years ago. they wouldnt let me bring it cuz it was too big. i think individual cases are alot more durible as well.
