i just recently discovered how much better it is with both cups on with both tracks playing, i find that i can pin point when the beats are matched exactly, i dont think i should get used to that style though

but as my contribution, I like one cup, and two for fine tuning if needed.

Well really, its personal preference, theres no set way to do it, you just find a way you like and keep doing it, but that being said, there are certain situations you might find yourself in (if you play out) that you will be in trouble either cos of a bad monitor/setup, or that the mixer doesn't support your way of monitoring in the headphones, the "old skool" way is, one cup playing only the cued up track, and your other ear listening to the club monitors, but now that we have many good mixers available, you will often find a mixer that supports all the ways headphone monitoring, but if you wanna be safe, learn to DJing with one headphone on, mix in headphones (stereo signals mixed), and split cued in the headphones, and then you'll be ready for anything.

I've been DJing for about 2 years now...a little more actually...and for a year and a half I beatmatched solely in the headphones and I thought that was the best way to do it. But I was in for a rude awakening the first tiem I played out and got stuck with the Rane Rotary which only allows you to cue one channel. From that night on I try to only beatmatch with one ear, and when I'm playing out, that way is actually easier because of the drastically increased volume. The only reason I beatmatch in the headphones is if for some reason I have to keep the volume down when I'm home.

Its whatever works for you IMO people say that you should learn and adapt to different mixers that they have in clubs so you dont fuck up endlessly.

In my case being the headline act of my own lounge room it does not really matter

One Cup for me.

My current mixer gives you the option of Split Channels.

However, my previous mixer (The one learned on) didn't,
so, one cup was the only way.

I do that aswell, or if the main speakers/monitors sound rather crap and is hard to pin point the highs for beatmatching, but if its all good, I do it one ear-one track.

I find that when I'm playing one ear in the cup I don't get it exactly right. When I'm split cue I can hear the minute differences better and can hear when its just a little bit off. Of course I only spin at Club 1207 (fancy way of saying my house) and haven't been forced to do it any other way.

in the house i spin with one ear in on the speakers and one in the phones. in my headphone ear i can hear both channels playing with the cued track the dominant (i have a DJM-600 so can adjust). i was forced to mix totally in the phones my first gig because the monitors were terrible in the booth and i turned em off. since the club speaker's sound was bouncing all over the walls it totally throws u off as it sounds like ur trainwreckin when actually ur mixin alrite. the only problem i have with mixin totally in the headfones is u dont know how loud it is coming in over the speakers.
