Looking for some tips on how to mix a vocal track with its Dub. If the dub is an instrumental version of the vocal track. Looking for advice on where to position the dub (e.g. half way through the vocal mix, towards the end etc). Is it best to start with the dub or the vocal when mixing? etc

Thats almost impossible to answer. It just depends on what song and what you are aiming for. It is like asking what is better; blue or red?

you could line up the breakdowns so the vocal tune starts but then half-way through the breakdown mix into the dub so the second half of the trackis the dub or vice versa. Or play the dub and at various moments fade the vocals in so you get a reduced vocal version.

but at the end of the day its up to your experimentation and the tune. Mainly your own experimentation though..........

ive never done that before, ive never seen the need. i like to make a flanher effect happen when u play them together though BUT, if i was to do what your asking, id play them together though one off and when you want the tracks to switch turn one off and the other on at the point you want em to switch.

this can be very useful to make 'live edits' with vinyl. however as with all forms of djing, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to do something. just mess around and see what sounds best.

if you cant tell on the fly, record yourself mixing the two, and then critique it. if you cant tell whats better or worse when listening to your own mix, you shouldn't be djing (or trying whatever youre trying).

Safe way to do it on the fly????

Beatmatch the instrumentals. THen change the vinyl to acapella, throw it in when you want.

You could even use 2 copies of the same track... so the same acapella but in different parts of the track. An old technique first utilised by House DJs.
