I used an ucx and just routed the monitor and main to 2 stereo busses then sent one to headphones. Tried on an apogee duet and same deal. I honestly wouldn't ever want to use a NI sound interface.

Just adding an Addendum to this:

At last in OSX, you can also use Firewire devices with this hack, however the video doesn't show you how to do this.

In the same you you find the name for usb devices, open Terminal but instead type:

system_profiler SPFireWireDataType

This will give you the system name for your Firewire interface.

Follow the rest of the instructions in the video to edit the hex data, paying careful attention to the spaces and format required.

Bingo! That should do it.

Just thought I would update this thread:

I managed to confirm that you can indeed do this with a firewire device (and I believe thunderbolt or USB-C too).

Just follow the instructions, add the name of your device and make sure the 0's fill up the space and Robert's your mother's brother!
