Question to the Pros

I've just got home from a gig...The sad thing aboutthis was i got kicked out from the booth at 1 AM!! I was supposed to have the whole night. Anyway, the thing was they told me my mixing was great but i was mixing wit htoo many breakdowns? Those people wanted me to use more progressive/techno stuffs and techniques. The guy told me i should mix continuously without any breakdowns in every track but more like a breakdown after 4 tunes or so.. Come off it! We play trance and it's all about the breakdowns! And i wasn't playing cheesy stuffs either. I've played at some of the very good clubs around and this place is the weirdest. Really was a sad night. Am I wrong here or are they? Any comments?

Re: Question to the Pros

Ouch, this is pretty sad... it must have sucked to have been kicked off, but don't worry about it too much. You must be able to accept good and bad things equally.

Maybe it was more of a prog/techno club?

Obviously he doesn't know what he is talking about.. must have been a prog/techno club.

Neither of you were solely wrong - you were both wrong. I don't know the entire situation, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I'd say that part of your responsibilities as a DJ were to talk to the club owner/promoter and discuss what you were going to spin. If the conversation took place and amounted to, "I'm spinning trance" - "OK, sounds good" - then this wasn't good enough. You should have specified what kind of trance you spin.

BUT! The owner/promoter was equally at fault for not inquiring you about it, or saying that his club caters to such-and-such musical tastes (i.e. prog/techno).

In the end, I would say this "disaster" can be attributed to a lack of adequate communication between both parties: the owner/promoter and the DJ.

Better luck next time! Just make sure you go in there absolutely certain of your position. Hope this helps.

If its a prog club and he told you to bring in a breakdown after every 4 tunes, then, with it being a prog club, you'd only get 1 breakdown every 40 minutes. Ouch

A song is like a story, a journey sensitized by waves of sounds trickling your mind, your soul.
With every journey comes an escalating progression toward a climax, this is the turning point whereby the truth, the whole, the heart of what the story is all about. [Breakdown] fits in here. After the breakdown of whatever sounds will most likely come to a minimal collection of effects, some songs have silent transmissions....this is the breakdown.

Comprehendo?

Well, the club normally plays techno. The owner is korean and he's one of the weirdest person i've ever met. Creepy and never speaks. I've discussed that i'd be playing trance. I've even played there couple weeks ago for an hour as an audition. The crowd...well to be honest there wasn't any crowd just a few people came and smoke some weed and left. Anyway, i'm not concerned about that too much anymore. I just don't understand why they'd ask me to have least breakdowns?! Listen to PvD set or armin set or tiesto or anyone minimum is one breakdown per tune! I wasn't really up for it anyway, haven't rally mixed for the whole week so i sort of didn't build the set up...too many similar tunes after tunes. I ain't giving up easily though..it's Far From Over!

there's nothing wrong with your building up your set, but incorporate progressive house into your sets... you can't strictly have a whole night of trance... you're looking at PVD and Armin and comparing yourself to them, which you shouldn't... why? because every party they go to they have someone openning up for them, so when they do get to play their 2 or 3 hour set, they play strictly peak hour trance... what to openning and closing djs play? progressive house or trance... but PROGRESSIVE!!... you should start buying those records now too along with your trance...

and personally i'd say the owner was right... imagine yourself coming to a party at 11pm, and as soon as you come in you get hit with veracocha - carte blanche... and imagine yourself now at 6am where you're still being hit with the same tunes... get the point?

but its ok, you learn from your mistakes, so don't be too hard on yourself about this...
