Read This! Staying Current With Your Music

Hey everyone I want to DJ and I am just getting into all this. The first question I have is how do you follow the genre and stay current with whats hot? What outlets do you guys use to know whats hot right now?

I currently just listen to Trance Around The World Podcast and a few others. So basically I just get my songs from podcasts. Do you guys follow the record companies websites for new releases or how do you do it?

I get so overwhelmed with everything out there, I don't know where to start.

I'm very into the "follow this label" function on beatport. Pretty much whenever I buy a track I will follow the label, so afterward I can see if it's had any recent releases whenever I log in.

This. Also listen to radio shows/podcasts from the big-name artists/DJs. They will play tracks long before they are released.

I wrote this a while back too: http://thedjpodcast.com/articles/how-to-find-new-music/

when i was djeing i was downloading livesets and reading tracklists as a maniac. it always left me 2 months behind so its not recommended if you want to be a genre-pioneer. i still download sets as a maniac but now i dont read tracklists.

the My Beatport feature is great for following labels and artists.

What i do is a combo if both radio shows and beatport searching.

I spend about 2-4 hours a week beatport searching and i only follow a couple of shows. I try not to keep up with the top charts or whatever and search for the true gems instead.

I don't, I don't want to play the same tracks everyone else does.

This..

much more often i'll get a 'where do you find this stuff from' comment than a 'i fucking love this track!'...

It's not that i don't like being a sheep. But while browsing the likes of beatport i like getting lost by clicking on various artists, then their labels then other peoples labels until i find something i like. Whether it's current or not i haven't a clue. If i like it and it suits the night i'm playing at. I'll buy it

I try to do like N3lly & get stuff I like rather than worrying how new it is, in my sets I'll often chuck some oldies in if they fit the flow. I like to listen sets from some of the more obscure DJ's on etn.fm, di.fm, afterhours.org & often hear great tracks I've not heard before to add to the "wants" list

Add me to the "I don't" list. I don't want to play what's hot, I want to play good music.

I download the latest beatport songs from the internets pirate styles. Delete about 99% of them. Do this once a week. Don't really feel like paying for most of it as I don't really listen or use it and it is just to stay current with what is happening to music. Call it an industry perk ?
