There is no "best" software than another. There are specific softwares to fulfill your needs, some djs and producers even use cheap computer software they find off the net to make the biggest choons out there, so avoid elitist point of view when deciding which software to buy.
Reason 3.0// is perphaps the most used software in the market, good for almost anything, even if that is loops, synths, tribal percussions etc. Essential for production.
Cubase ... A very interesting editing program, use this when you have finished your track on reason and want to make bad-ass edits. This is perphaps the most used editing programs by the pros.
Soundforge...An editing software that competes with Cubase, but completely different. You can use it to cut your tracks into pieces and then arrange them.
Ableton live 5...Once you have many tracks under your folder, and ready to make it big. Use ableton to manipulate the tracks, loops and other utilities you have produced using this software, try to keep it real though, Ableton is good for live performances and is being over-used by the market IMO.

If you have the time go with Nuendo over Cubase. Same interface, made by the same company, just more powerful and more options
