Compressor/Limiter question

Ppl, can someone explain to me the benefit of hardware Compressor/Limiter? Why do I need one? is setting the levels in Cubase or other recorder/sequencer sufficient? What are the benefits of hardware compressor and things to look for?

Do a search for compression or compressor in this forum and start reading. Also go and read some other guides on compression, such as the ones at intermusic - particularly the "What the hell is: Compression" article.
