say it with me brotha, 1 2 33 4 .. k thx die, nah j/k but that is the standard breakbeat pattern, 1 and 3's being bass/kick and 4's being hi's. standard dance music is 4/4 or "1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4".. makes sense real fast

Here's a couple well known breaks tunes:
Sasha - Rabbitweed
Mike Koglin - Enjoy the Silence (Tekara mix)

i thought enjoy the silence was just trance
so breaks is actually a genre, what defines it musically
melodic? or is it just like trance except with out the constant bassline

There's breaks trance, trance and breakbeat.

Breakbeat -> It's a totally different genre with several sub-genres. Its most important characteristic is the beat: in the beginning, producers used to play breaks from soul music (the "amen") and later some people decided to produce a similar beat using ordinary drum machines. Amongst the sub-genres you can have:

Big beat -> You know chemical brothers and fatboy slim, don't you? They play big beat.

Chemical Breaks -> You also know crystal method, don't you? They play chemical breaks.

and many many more...

Breaks trance -> Just a hybrid between trance and breakbeat. Instead of the 4/4 beat (which is sometimes used), the tunes have a break beat, just like the tunes from Big beat and Chemical Breaks (as I've already mentioned).

Trance -> I guess you know what it is

I would write more, but I'm in a hurry

Edit: Enjoy the silence is trance, but the Tekara mix has lots of breaks in it -> therefore you've got some breaks trance

If you want another breaks example, anything by DJ Icey is solid.

Anything that doesn't have a standard 4/4 beat, and goes between 120-150 BPM's. If you get much quicker than that, you're heading into Jungle territory, and if you go much slower, it's hip-hop.

hehe, every kind of music can have sudden "pauses" In fact, one of my favourite techno DJ's (Ken Ishii) often does it in some of his sets
