We are the true UNITED, the east and west end of Newcastle merged to form Newcastle United. Manchester United was never united, it's just a meaningless name which they shamelessly took. Before 1903 they were known as Newton Heath but they decided that sounded crap so they hijacked the term 'United' which Newcastle had already been using, rightfully, for over 20 years.

No matter how far Man Utd and their riches go the true United will always be in the geordie nation. For you it will always just be a meaningless name which you cling onto. No wonder the chants of "United" are so pathetic in Old Trafford, you know it doesn't mean anything.

Actually mate, I have always enjoyed reading your posts, because I can tell that you are an educated football fanatic. I give you full respect there, and trust, I know all about Newton Heath and the change to 'United'. Though it doesn't matter in one sense, I certainly understand your admonishment of M.U. on the other.

That issue aside though, the riched of Manchester United have been well earned, and may I once again point out that the core of that team is British and has been brought up through the system. Rivalries aside, when you take Arsenal and Manchester United, you can't honestly tell me you respect the Arse more. Can we at least agree that they have purchased their entire team? Manchester has to get some respect for bringing Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Gary Neveille, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, and David Beckham all the way up from schoolboys. Give credit where credit is due. Anyway, the championship will be an interesting one to be sure. I know that football is increasingly a game of high finance, but living over here mate, I have learned all about that.

Baseball is a shite sport, yes. But you have the New York Yankees estimated at approvx. 825 million U.S. dollars competing with teams like the Montreal Expos who were are owned by the other major league teams by way of financial collapse. They can't compete, plain and simple. But everyone loves the Yankees right? The disparity gets waayyyyy worse over here. Let me put it this way. A-Rod from Texas Rangers signed a monstrous deal....I believe he earns more than the payroll budget of severl Major League teams. Economic Parity in sports is not to be.....but I believe that Machester United could be like Real Madrid and buy all the players.....Raul is their only notable local product.....at least Manchester have some principles and integrity when it comes to the matter. People will always be haters to those who support a huge team. That is the reason so many on this continent hated Jordan and the Bulls. There will always be bandwagon jumpers. I have liked United for years, though at the age of 24 you do the math) I really could not have been a fan during the woeful 80's of 'Scousedom. Let's just say that I know the history of the club, and I followed them (though to be fair, cable only started carrying football at any rate of mention after Cantona left). All I can say is that I like them in and around 1993, but that an element of my family hails from Salford.....and I have stuck with them even when they have had off years. At the end of the day, as a fan, you have only to answer to yourself. If you start following a sport, pick a team and stick with them faithfully, I see no reason to hate on others. I DO realize though, that people follow the best teams so that they can be on the side of the winner. This is a pitty, and that hallmark of the casual sports enthusiast. Along with the evolution of modern sport to become high corporate games, we must acknowledge that added element of the casual (AND FICKLE) team followers.

Man Utd's youth system is indeed an example to all but Man Utd has had more than it's fair share of commercialism, whether it's been breaking the transfer record time and time again or negotiatin deals with BSkyB. As far as Newcastle is concerned, the most famous examples are the signing of Andy Cole (then a record transfer) during the magnificent Keegan era and the attempted signing of Alan Shearer, twice.

Newcastle has also made efforts to keep local talents, with Alan Shearer, Shola Ameobi, Michael Chopra, Robbie Elliott, Stephen Harper etc and of course our manager Bobby Robson who epitomises what it means to be passionate about the game. We've also kept local sponsors with the exception of NTL, such as Newcastle Brown Ale and McEwans lager (from Scottish & Newcastle breweries) and our next strip is sponsored by Northern Rock.

I prefer Arsenal but only as the lesser of two evils. They have bought up their squad but our rivalry with Man Utd is frankly a bigger one that that with Arsenal. You know the history of Newcastle/Man United games, they're always high-scoring thrillers. In our two games this year there have been 16 goals. We don't have the same history with Arsenal as we do with you, at least not in my lifetime.

Frankly the 6-2 defeat wasn't as gutting as the Everton game, because we lost fair and square to you wheras the antics of Neale Barry last week cost us any hope of winning the league, which may explain why some of the lads just didn't have their hearts in it on Saturday. The Everton game, realistically (though fans remained optimistic as fans do), marked the end of our title challenge. I'm sure any impartial viewer would have seen that. Everton should not have recieved a penalty and should have been down to ten men, that much is indisputable. Once again we are left with a bitter taste in the mouth (it was Neale Barry who controversially sent off Robert against Arsenal earlier this season in a very important game), fighting for a place which we had worked so hard to earn. If anything should happen to Newcastle this season, I think people will look back on that injust Everton game as the turning point in our fortunes. Losing is disappointing, sometimes embarrassing, but to be robbed in such a manner is aggravating and appalling. I hope Neale Barry suffers the same fate as Rennie because he has been persistently poor, not just with Newcastle. Anyway, what's done is done, we have to look to the future now, but an injust game at Goodison and a routing the week after will test the resiliance of our players. All our remaining fixtures are from the bottom 7 teams in the league, but all but Sunderland have a lot to play for and won't be easy games at all.

Still, we are a learning side who hasn't won anything for decades and I'm sure we have learnt a lot from these last two seasons.

The one thing I do fear should Newcastle continue to rise is the gloryhunter factor. The idea of St James' Park one day filling up with Japanese tourists flashing their cameras throughout the game horrifies me. We are a city and a fanbase with a lot of character and I'd hate to see our success invite an invasion of bandwaggon followers.

Fair Play to all that you said above mate, and especially the last part. Newcastle has improved immensely, and in tough times. I don't know how you feel about your last acquisition, but I believe that you did well to power in on an ailing Leeds checkbook and lift Johnathan Woodgate. In effect, your worry is not misplaced, because Newcastly should again qualify for Champions League, and I can even see them surpassing the performance of Arsenal in Europe. At home, they will once again be serious contenders if not champions one day soon (and I know all about the rivalry though admittedly I would situate it as more moderate for us, since you wait in a long line of the top rivalries for the Red Devils including 'Scouse, Leeds, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and in many ways even Blackburn depending on who you ask).

The point of what I am saying is, Newcastle is on the rise, and I feel that you have already surpassed traditional yet also recent powerhouses including Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham to name a few. Obviously large gains are being made towards the Red Devils level and that of the Arse (and I am making an allowance for the viable possibility that you feel they are already par, though I would not concur, but to each his own). With the increased success, as you pointed out, the bandwagon jumpers will head at you and then questions of legitimacy of fan base and fan loyalty will invariably arise. People are seduced by success, and they strive to live vicariously through the accomplishments of others. Worse still is living vicariously through a team only recently usurped, having not endured the doldrums and pain of the down times while dreaming and hoping for 'better days' as it were. So really, you will very likely soon know what it feels like to have your loyalty and legitimacy questioned as others eye you with the sort of contempt that needs not voicing:"You only support them because..." and so it goes in the sports world. Obviously ancient and deeply ingrained medeival rivalries complicate the English game (in North Amreica rivalries between and among sports team are very manufactured and transparent), but for the most part success always breeds the attitude of entropy and a rejection or resentment in large part of the mass culture movement that follows.

Just my thoughts, I don't know...
