Thumbs down Disappointed...

For those that move around a lot downtown, esp. on campus of your fav. Torontonian uni. (UofT or Ryerson or what-have-you), you'll know what I mean here:

I walk pass a lot of guys that hand out flyers to clubs and stuff, and I always pick them up to see what's going on etc.

And I'm so disappointed, because all of the clubs (at least that are being advertised on the street) are totally (from a TA perspective) boring crap!

I mean, if I had a dime for every club that features "funky house, r&b, soul, reggae, blahblahblah", I would be richer than Tiesto.

It's really disappointing, even sickening, that in a city that draws such huge trance stars (Tiesto, Ferry, Gielen, you name them, for pete's sake they probably played here!!!!) , and YET, the "mainstream underground" (oxymoron?) clubs rarely, if at all, feature trance.

Or maybe I'm just stupid and am missing something. But from what I can tell from word-of-mouth etc, and on this forum, is that trance is not a biggie in this city. (even if there are massive trance events at Viva, Guv, etc, as said above)

Thoughts, comments, corrections? I wonder if anyone shares my opinions.

(oh and when I say trance I mean prog too... also underrepresented, IMO... i mean... Deep Dish GU in Toronto.. for god's sake!! And yet, where is the prog for the average night out???).

the only ones that don't fit the exception are the ones handed out by Systems .. too bad they're also literred all over the floor a few feet away ..

and is trance big in TO .. ? yea sure ..

is it bigger than HipHop, R&B, Top40 .. ? nope not yet .. atleast i don't think so ..

Awhile ago, I was in front of Robarts Library at U of T and on some of the lampposts, there were signs saying "Tech Trance Thursdays" or something like that. For sure, I thought that must have been a TA's work, but then... the sign disappeared later on.

When you force feed the people only certain types of music, they are only going to like certain forms of music, period. Other than the internet, or at events where can you go to listen to proper trance? Absolutely no where.

It's really wierd in Hamilton because I often see flyers for drum n bass, breaks, and techno but never trance...and trance is way more mainstream than those types of music.

I also hate to see flyers littered everywhere..they must be expensive to make...and so many get wasted.

^^^^ Yeah, it's weird for sure... seems like Hamilton is more of a d'n'b town - rather surprising!

Actually I went with a very good friend of mine (who goes to McMac) to see Aphrodite at some club in Hamilton a while back (forgot the name). And yet I doubt they get any trance stars like that..

corsten_addict, I know exactly what you mean ! I also noticed some "Tech Trance Thursdays" fliers around at one point, but now I think they're all but gone (or ripped up etc.). That's more of a fact of flier life, though - you can always expect that someone else will soon put up a new flier over yours.

I know that trance is not big in this city, but it sucks that there is such a disparity between the "high-end" events (guv, viva) and the "normal" clubs. It's like they're mutually exclusive.

I mean, someone coming to Toronto to see the Tiesto and Armin events will get a (FALSE) sense that Toronto is a big trance city, because they will naturally suppose that the only way a city can have DJ's of that calibre is if the underlying club foundation already strongly supports trance.

Otherwise, it's like bringing in big country stars to Amsterdam. I.e. sure to fail.

So if there is such a huge disparity, I just *wonder* how we even got to have big trance events here at all? Was trance bigger in the past, or are there just some subtle marketing/business factors?

actually, i was just talking about this to a buddy of mine and i concluded that the reason trance isn't mainstream is because ppl are spoon fed the other generes through TV or radio so they grow up liking a specfic thing because it's popular rather than it sounds good. When u don't have many options, chances are ur choice will not reach its full potential and u will get stuck at something bad rather than if u had more choices and given the right to choose for urself. ANYWAY, pretty much what Itika said.

NOW: i really don't know the solution to such problem(s) other than we should educated these people. Whenever anyone is over my house, they are forced to listen to trance wheather they like it or not (now u know why i don't have many friends come over ) but it seems to be working!

i guess trance will get bigger by word of mouth. or else we need something like having a producer make it big from Toronto and that way they'llbe featured in the mainstream bs thatwe hear everytime we tune in 103.5 (not that i ever bother) but u get my point... we need a turning point!

Trance not mainstream?
Hmm, well, believe it or not, I like it just the way it is... I think I'd get sick of it in case it went mainstream around here.

That's why I think it'll be hard for me to get sick and tired of this tribal/progressive house I've been into lately... it's too goddamn underground! Whoo-hoo!

Too true, mate. I don't think I'd enjoy it when I see too many people listening to trance. If they listened to it because it's a trend... well... that's not something desirable.
