'Girl' Friendly music?

i was reading an interview with armin van burren and i thought he had some interesting advice for DJ's

this was

'guys stay because of the girls, so play girl friendly music' not taken word for word but you get the idea

question i have is, how do you define girl friendly music? when talking pop its relatively easy, but dance music is a little bit more difficult. im talking mainly trance/house/prog here. my guess on what mr van burren meant, was tunes which have a lot of synths, are uplifting and nice. not too much dark stuff. but then i think about it, and a lot of chicks like the dark stuff....so eek! what do u guys reckon?

My Only remote clue would be stuff with lots of chick vocals (trance for example).

Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. Might be something to ask the females on a general forum for rave culture (e.g. a local "rave" forum).

Hehe. Armin knows what he means.
I personally think "girl-friendly" music is generally in the sound he generally produces (uplifting vocal trance).
And the like, yes many girls may like the dark and dirty beats, but most of the time, the main-streamers will like something with vocal and "airy" trance riffs.

Girl friendly music realies on vocals...

Why is "pop" music so popular? becuase you can sing to it.. simple huh!

So the key is VOCALS

the key is vocals and a simple tune alot of girls like hard house/trance because the beat is pretty simple and you can just move to it. Just don't go crazy with vocals in your set though cuz it can get old quick.

well, most girls who like trance that i know (besides me) like the uplifting stuff with female vocals singin about something or other.
one friend of mine says she doesn't like it when "it's just a beat". my other friend says she likes it when there "is stuff going on" in the track. probably meaning melodic synths and vocals.

most girls like the cheese, but me, i like it hard! i have never met a girl who likes trance as hard as i do. and i am a girly-girl!

but what's interesting about armin's comment is that it really isn't applicable in the us. when i went to see armin in nyc in december, most of the people there were guys, and most where hardcore fans of his! i didnt' see much ass-grabbing going on...but i'm sure the scene is different in europe. one guy i speak to in england talks like armin plays at the local clubs every week. geez. and i almost had a heart-attack when i got his autograph...

im in new zealand, so work that out

id say the girls here definitely appreciate the funkier house over the synthy trance. although there is still more girls here who like synthy vocally trance then the guys.

so i guess it all depends how you look at it

if only we were all super star djs who could read fully into his answer!

I think for the most part they just want something simple that you don't have to listen to a lot of to understand. I used to get the "play something that I know" line a lot from my former female friends. Even though I despised doing that, they appreciated it. Sometimes you just have to compromise.
