I use my Playstation 2 to watch dvd's. Is there a way to play dvd's from outside Europe. Is it also possible to let it play mpeg movies or avi's?

Yes to play DVDs from outside Europe u need either a mod-chip or you can buy DVD RegionX(think thats the right name).
To play divX(avi's) u need to have a mod-chip installed & a cd with some software(don't remember the name)but is very faulty.
mpeg playback is not possible i think.

you can also buy a gameshark. lets me play dvds from all regions.
