Hey,

I live in New York and most people i know are into hip hop and have little or no idea of any kinds of electronic music, especially trance. I mean i can go to New York City and hear all the trance i want, but in general it seems pretty unknown.

Do you think electronic music is just taking longer to become popular in america? Do you think it will ever catch on as it does in Europe?

What do you guys think?

the americas are a little behind when it comes to trance.. the whole thing originated in europe so it is expected

its kind of like us being 2 series of simpsons behind the US hehehe

LOL...the last 2 seasons aren't that great IMO...

i think it also has to do alot with the dj's in your area, where do they get their vinyl, and where do they look for influence...lot's of factors. i know the TO dj's are pretty up to date

well i think it depends.

certain people in the US, like TAs are wayyy ahead of even most(non TA) europeans. go ask a dutch person your age that isnt a TA about Sander Kleinenberg- they wont have a clue most likely.

certain places in the US host many of the same DJs, Miami- hosts them all pretty much.

MOST people in the US dont know shit tho.

its not that US is behind completely, but its pretty damn close. same goes for simpsons. im sure there are l33t simpsons fans outside the US that have all the new eps on the computer! hehe|

I see, the main reason i ask is because im looking to get into DJ'in and the main music i will be spinning is trance, my problem lies in whether or not i can get people interested in trance. It would be awesome if in a few years im on top of it and it becomes big time in the US, but im curious as to the chances of that.

LOL...here's a good test

get a car and probably put a system...

cruise along to a high school or university (depending on your target age group)

pump up some current to semi current trance and see what their reaction is...

IF THEY GO...WHAT IS THAT TECHNO, OR GOOD TECHNO TRACK!

then you know it's not gonna take off.

I do my part to get americans into trance.... are you doing yours?

Little things can go a long way.

Like, give a trance CD as a birthday present.
When you get tickets for events like PvD, Tiesto, etc... get your friends to come along, buy their ticket the first time if you have to. After the first time, they'll get hooked and buy their own tickets from then on.

Hell, one year ago, my friends called everything techno and didn't know there was anything besides corny cartoon music. Now, they're keeping me informed on the events going on around here

I like to think I had something to do with it

hey, everybody is gonna be calling it techno if they really are clueless... that doesn't mean they won't get into it and start learnign the differences...

Sorry to say it, but everybody has to start somewhere. I'm 100% sure there was a time when most of everybody here couldn't tell the difference between techno, trance, house, etc... and just called it all techno.

I know I did... (Ok, I was 14 lol) but still!

Im not trying to be an asshole but your never goimg to succeed in adj'ing if your just doing it to be famous. you have to really have love for the music your trying to bring across or you'll be like every other Dj just spinning the top 40 crap. If your music is good enough I wouldnt worry about getting people interested.

The odds aren't very likely... no matter where you spin. Maybe if you spin & produce... and are amazing at both... and can market yourself enough to get a label. Then you might have a chance.

There are already a lot of DJs who are really good yet aren't known all that much.

If you want to DJ for the $$... forget about it, it's almost impossible.

I dont think america is behind... you just might not have a good scene... or knowledge of your local trance scene... cause as far as I know, the trance scene over here in SF has been one of the biggest of all genres for a while... so i guess it probably depends on either where you're at or who you know... i guess like someone said before, if you're track selection and mixing are good then you won't really have to worry about what if "America is behind" ...eventually "we" will catch up with you lol...(you must be spinning some really next level stuff!)

as far as other American DJs that have become big and started labels and opened record stores and whatnot, the ones that I know of that have been succesful, paid dues, being dedicated to the scene for many years before they truly became "Big" and had a following.... so be prepared for a lotta hard work.. oh yeah, one tip, dont spin cheeze lol ...l8ers

the underground scene in the usa is the healthiest it's ever been and I don't think you could stop it if you wanted to.

I mean most records are released in Europe first then the United States and Canada because England is the biggest market for it. If you look at many A class deejays, they are playing far more North American dates than others and it's a trend. The scene will continue growing in North America and believe me, all the producers and deejays want to score big in America because you can make a lot of money very very quickly. Moby is from the states but look how he has done very very well in North America. It will keep growing then again as long as they have ppl to fill venues then promoters are going to keep booking deejays.
