I just thought a a fantastic idea for a new pc program , i dont think it exist yet , ok here it is , we all download huge amounts of files from the internet could be movies , mp3s , pictures or whatever , ok now we have a /download directory with 453 files in there is allsorts, txt files jpgs mp3s , exe's etc. now ok we dont have time to catorgorize and move everything into nice orders into nice folders , ok here goes the cleaver bit, the program has an auto update feature which updates a huge list of artists lets say there 25,000 artist in the world , e.g rock , dance , trance , gothic , pop , clasical under each catergory we have all the artists, now ok we run the program and we select a few options and then we select where the /download folder is and press start, the program will goto the first file could be anything lets do an example

Program Searching.....Found.........Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel.mp3 > Move file to Desired location.........C:\MUSIC\TRANCE\SINGLES\P..File moved to location Next file.

Program Searching.....Found........PaintShopPro7.zip > Move file to desired location........C:\Appz\Paint Programs\

Ok now when the program picks a file it checks its file type and file size and according to your options at the start e.g Dont move anything over 50MB.
and everytime it selects a file it checks the Database for the artist for if it was a mp3 file it would goto the mp3 Database list, then we add loadsa fancy options like delete any mp3 file under 2mb, Also the program can detect a file name example 01Paul Van Dyk- Together we will conquer, it would find the track name and remove the 01 and clean up the Tag file.

Ok it sounds complex but i reckon its programmable, there are tools out there which do this but dont actually move the files, e.g ID3 TAG renamer etc.

and then reports it all to the piracy hawks?

a legit autoupdating list of software and mp3s, comparing against your own downloads. sounds like a plan.

yeah, it would have to be decentralised so there aint no central server for the RIAA to kick in and rape it

if u host that database of files and lists and whatever

dont be suprised if u get feds and whatnot kicking down ur door and raiding ur room

and as for the program, y would anyone go and do that?

I think it's a good idea, especially the mp3 part, maybe the software part is harder and not that useful but still a good idea. Too avoid legal problems, make it an open source project and it will last forever =)

forget anything about the riaa. all one has to do to take care of this issue is to put the server in another country, though you do have to be careful. ukraine was held out of nato partnership because of a lot of copyright infringement issues.

as for the app itself... it's nothing complicated. just some file i/o. to code the underlying architecture would take no time at all. well, actually - you can do all of that in a 100-line shell script in linux, but i doubt that helps more than .01% of us, does it?

these things are f'kin' hard to set up and keep clean tho. Any kinda peer to peer app like that also takes a lot of dedicated server space to push things around. But hey, if itworks and takes off at least u can fil ut full of spyware and make money off it :P

well, tis true. BUT, where are you going to be getting the names of the copyrighted files? Also, as you say the RIAAs reach goes a long way. they are trying to shut down everything, even outside their jurisdiction. They haven't yet gotten Kazaa, because it's located out of the country, but they have sent messages to users saying that what they are doing is illegal. It's easy to see the progression to the next step of simply tracking those users down and charging them.

I believe that the DCMA, Patriot Act, and Patriot Act II provide for surveillance of users in these type of situations, and in some cases even exempt companies from penalty for causing deliberate damage to users who were caught downloading.

i can code this program and host the list file, but who would make the list? 25,000 or so artists is alot
