Smoking ..umm..something SonyMD w/ Radio?...Any1??

I am interested in getting a MiniDisk player to record mixes from my turntables, etc. I have no issues what so ever as far as how to do that.

Upon looking into the different players available....I noticed a SonyMD player w/ AM/FM tuner option. My question is:

-Does any1 have this particular player? advantages/disadvantages

-Does this MiniDisk player give u the option of recording straight from its tuner to the disk???? (MAIN QUESTION, cus that would be greeeat!!!)

Any help from u guys is greatly appreciated. Laterz

Word of warning with Sony MD players (and Sony in general) - things have a habit of breaking and sony spare parts are stupidly expensive.

My mini disc player cost £220. The in-line remote control stopped working during the warrenty period - but my local Sony Centre would not fix it. They told me a replacemet in-line remote costs £200 . .

Just to let you know, the new Sony MDs don't have a line in jack, only a usb port, which sucks. The old ones did, that's what I got, and they work alright except for the fact that the software doesn't allow you to transfer stuff to your computer from the md that you didn't record from the computer. But all you need from the old ones is a 1/8" to rca cable which is like $3, hook it to the record output on your mixer and line in on the md and go.

So basically the only way to record your mix with the new ones would be to hook the mixer to your computer, record and transfer it to the md, but then you could just burn cds if you could do that...

I got my md for $60 on clearance. Discounts rule

I have the Sony MZ-R70 MD recorder/player.

Not sure if this is the one that's not sold anymore.... But it definately works quite well when recording mixes. The line in works great, and you can adjust recording volumes and other things when recording something. It also has a mic-in, but you wont be using this for recording a mix.

A good buy... if you can find it cheap, which I'm sure you can these days. MD is slowly dying out.

The other thing I must mention is quality. If you're going for a real professional recording then I'd say just record directly line-in into your computer. MD compresses your audio (I believe it's a 4:1 compression ratio, of course, mp3's have a compression ratio of 12:1, so if you've planning on encoding your mixes into mp3 then an MD would be fine)

All in all, it's great for home recording stuff and demo discs and the like... But if you're going to be doing something more proffesional, an MD may be the wrong choice. DAT is where it's at when it comes to professional recording standards, that might be something to look into as well. Although even used DAT recorders on eBay can be quite expensive.

Actually, in the US, there are two Sony MD Walkman models with AM/FM tuners: the MZ-NF610 ($200) and the MZ-NF810CK ($280). Both of those have line inputs, so you can record mixes from your turntables or other sources. Unfortunately, neither of these MDs let you record directly from their bundled tuners; both of those units actually have tuner circuits in their bundled remotes and not inside the MD units themselves.

Hope this helps.

Actually, pagoda, in the US only the bottom-of-the-line MD Walkman unit MZ-NE410 ($130) is like that. There is another such MD Walkman marketed in other countries (but not in the US): the MZ-NE810. The other recording MD Walkman units do have a line-in/optical-in jack (that same jack operates in either analog or optical mode, depending on the connector that you plug into that jack).

Smoking ..umm..something Thanks

Thanks you guys. U guys answered all my Q's but Shady Slim answered more complete of what I was looking for. My main thing was that I wanted to record GDJB sets while I was on the go or whatever, cus I'm always out sunday nites and always have to make it a fu!king date w/ my radio to tune in and really catch the new tracks (Great show by the way!!!). I just wanted to record on the fly and possibly record them to cpu and burn to cd. Thanks 2 everyone that responded. I've decided not to get the MD player. Sorry Sony !

Peace
