I have just been informed by one of the leaseholders of Simon's, Mike Goldberg, that the hated Gainesville anti-rave ordinance is comming in front of the city commission this Fall for re-evaluation. Now, the city has been known to do some really stupid things(2AM, roads, etc.)but with 4 new commissioners in office, it looks like we have a serious chance of this 2AM closing time being repealed! The UF Student Body President has already gotten oral promises from all 4 of the new commissioners to vote against the ordinance. These commissioners realize the harmfull effect on the downtown businesses, and the dangerous possibilities of every club in Gainesville forcing it's drunks out at the same time.

I'm not getting my hopes up, because, as a Gainesville resident, I know the Commission has traditionally been a corrupt bunch of arse-holes with little sense, however, as September draws closer, we can only cross our fingers for the return of THE City of Gainesville, as we all remember it.

meh. Is this a council vote, or a general vote?

Students always talk about getting things done their way, but they never bother to vote, so are usually laughed at.

I would prefer if the state law itself was found unconstitutional, rather than have individual cities decide not to enforce the law.





Finally, I would like to hear an argument against letting clubs stay open another 2 hours after last call to let their patrons sober up.

the 2am shit is because the law says you can't sell alcohol after 2am in gainesville. tallahassee is the same. so why would the clubs WANT to stay open after 2am if they can't sell alcohol and make money? unless the 2am alcohol law is being changed, i honestly don't think you'll see any change in the way things work.

It's an ordinance that clubs close at 2AM, not a law. City Ordinances are voted on by the city commission, not the students. And this president actually knows his shit and is very well respected by the city, so unless the commission member go back on their oral commitments, we may be able to stay open later soon. Like I said, I'm not getting my hopes up, but it would be nice.

Man I remember when I went to UF back in 98-99 and Simon's would stay open till the wee hours in the morning, we would come out at like 7 or 8 in the morning after a night of seeing Oakenfold, PVD, and Union Jack for like $5!!! Damn those were the good old days. I'm afraid Gville will never be like that again. It was a different time though, I remember Oakie would come back and spin at our friends after parties in the basement of their houses..I def. don't think that will ever happen again. But then again like I said those were different times, the whole trance thing was new and I must say that Gainesville was at the forefront of the electronic revolution in the US. I had a great time while i lived there...Hopefully they will repeal that lame ass 2 in the morning bullshit..

Yeah that was quite a time to be living in Gville. Simons was the bomb!!! PVD was always there same as Oakie, we were friends with rabbit, man what a crazy time and even crazier parties!!!Def a good time! I haven't been back there since i left in 2000...That place brings back a lot of memories!!!

I wish I would have been of age for the Sundance parties. Carl Cox at SoulHouse and Dar/Deisleboy in the Loft, same party. 2AM destroyed Soulhouse, literally(it's now a Federal Courthouse )

If they repeal the 2AM ordinance there will be some parties here for a while.

unfortunatly most students in G-ville are residents of somewhere else, so unless they claim their permanent residence is in g-ville they cant vote. also the 2am alcohol is a state statute not a city ordinance, miami had to get a special exemtion, and its very doubtful that g-ville would get one, too small of a town, but even if they cant serve alcohol it would be nice to have simons open all night.

The students aren't voting, it's for the City Commission, I beleive.

And I don't care if they serve drinks. If the place was open till 5AM with drinks served till 2, I'd be perfectly happy. There are always other ways, and about 2 I'm normally as drunk as I need to be anyway.
