I fear that regardless of how loud the voices of protest get, Michael Powell will continue his dismantling of public airwaves...
The real shame is that the upcoming vote--much like the Telecommunications Act in 1996--is receiving virtually no critical coverage in the mainstream media; the entities that do cover it often treat it as business story rather than a human interest story and thus bury it in the business section or some other obscure place.
People of all walks of life should be up in arms about this: music lovers that bitch about canned radio programming and the lack of diversity on radio; small-scale entrepreneurs and community institutions that rely on local independent papers; good-government types who support investigative journalism (which was well on its way to becoming extinct even before the current scandals); intellectuals who lament the narrowing of the spectrum of debate.
I shudder to think of a near future where I have no choice but to read the Murdoch Times with my coffee; where I can hear the same crap on the radio no matter what part of the country i'm in; where television programming is even more unimaginative and banal than it already is.
Outstanding! Thanx for the update. I'm pretty confident that this will get into the House and Senate floor. Both the House and Senate are fully aware of this hot topic, and will likely address this issue soon (hopefully, that is). It's up to you to make sure your elected officials hear your voice. Shoot them an email ASAP to let them know. If you don't know your Congressman or Senators, find them at
Incidently, my boy Congressman Dennis Moore (D-Kansas) is very against FCC deregulation. He gave me an email voicing his concern, and his continual efforts to fight deregulation. Your voice does make a difference folks (provided you actually give a crap about this)!
