I am against any racism, and therefore I am against affirmative action also. It is attempting to solve issues by superficial makeup and sugarcoding, while the real problem remains. The real issue is that large amount of population in american cities is uneducated and unprotected by the police. For one reason or another, those people are mostly blacks/hispanic or some other minorities. And here affirmative action makes 2 mistakes. First one is to generalize people based on their race. While it is true that many blacks are living in horrible conditions, that is not determined by race. I'm sure there are some white people living in similarly horrible conditions, as well as there are black people who live in relatively good conditions. That means that a white person from bad neighbourhood is infact hindered in his attempt to go to college compered to a relatively well off black individual. So in some cases affirmative action is actually amplifying the very differences it is trying to decrease. The second mistake affirmative action makes is that it tries to fix the problem instead of preventing it. It is doing nothing to prevent young children in bad neighbourhoods from joining gangs, becoming drug addicts or burglars, etc. but it is instead helping those black people who already have managed to stay out of trouble during their youth. Of course, I guess it is cheaper that way than having regular police patrols and stations in the crime infested areas. So while the idea of affirmative action is benevolent, the very base of it is racist and discriminating, because it is using racism to fight racism. This means affirmative action is covertly propagating something it is trying to prevent, and therefore I am against any such initiatives.

And my thoughts on affirmitive action are much like yours. Any time you categorize anyone by race, color, ethnicity in a society that preaches equality and fairness as its idealogy; and in our education system of all places! The centers that should be responsible for teaching fairness to the students whom it prepares for life!

This is my take on the entire issue. I think that race sholud not be considered at all when people are being admitted or not into colleges. The admissions board show totally disregard race, ethnicity, religion, etc. The applicant should be able to earn their way into college. I don't believe in extra points for being a minority, but I don't agree with people being turned away because they are part of a majority or because they are part of an unwanted minority (i.e. Mexican, African-American). Let's face it, the most accepted "minority" is Asian. That's pretty much seen all over the place.
Also, I don't believe that gender should be an issue. Lots of colleges want to try to keep a balanced ratio of males and females. I believe that that's a crock of shit. If you're a bad student, you're a bad student. There should be no exceptions. Call me old-fashioned, but that's the way I think it should be.

I agree with you, yet I still wonder why so many people are obsessed with gaining admission to a place where they're obviously not wanted.

There's this whole issue here with Affirmative action. I also dont believein giving extra points to minorities, but I dont agree on turning them away and giving better chances of admissions to .. the whites. At least thats the deal here in Florida, with University of Florida and all the big universities, they were known for taking mostly whites.. but, thats been changing a bit lately.

It's as simple as this: If they're smart, let them in, if they aren't deny them admission. Seriously, wouldn't someone from a minority who is not a smart as the others feel uncomfortable being there?

There's also one other aspect I forgot to mention. If black people have bonus points in college, it actually might harm them later on. Put yourself in a position of a businessman who needs a new employee. You know that black people have it easier, so even if a white and black person have the same grades, chances are you're gonna hire a white person instead because you know that person hasn't had special treatment and has deserved his grades.
