Hi

If I am starting off learning how to DJ, I want to pick up beginner turntables?

I don't have the cash to buy a really good set, ala Technics or Vestex.

I have heard that I mustn't even look at belt-driven turntables? Is this correct, or are they okay to start off on?

I have seen some shops offering Omnitronic or JB Systems turntables. They seem very reasonably priced. Are they worth it, or should I rather pick up a set of Gemini or Stanton?

My m8 s got a jb-systems turntable, and my experience is that they suck, if u want a descent turntable, go for technics (maybe 2nd hand), i heard numark and denon are not bad 2. Certainly not jb-system, and i'd recommend you a direct-drive turntable !

Whatever you choose...make sure that they are direct drive and NOT belt driven. Direct drive turntables run on electromagnetic energy and it does not harm them to hold the platter still while on. Belt drives on the other hand have a big "rubber band" that goes around a motor and the platter and if you try to hold the platter still you'll still have the motor tugging away on the belt. Absolutely go with direct drive and if you're really serious about DJing, the save up and hold out for some Technics 1200s. If you're not that serious about DJing and it's just something that you want to play around with, then go for the Geminis or the Stantons.

Basically, I can't afford the Technics. I have roughly the budget of one 1200 to spend on an entire starters pack.

I have no idea whether I will be any decent, so I want to get something kinda decent at first & if I can get going, am enjoying it & I'm decent then I'll start looking at extra money.

Well then, make sure that they are direct drive. I would say go with Stantons or maybe the Geminis. I'm not real familiar with the Geminis, though. You'll want to find something that has good tourque, meaning that when you hold the platter still and then release it, it get's up to speed real fast. You don't want one that slowly winds it's way up to the proper speed. Also look for a good solid platter on it. If it's a cheap plastic platter, you're gonna end up bouncing your needle all over the record while trying to cue it up.
