Behold, my arse. Trance vs. Porn

I actualy threw this one out in another thread, but figured I'd get an input (ahem...) from other TAs on their views about Trance...

Before we start - I am a 100% trance addict. I love trance/electronic music and I'm not bashing anyone. But here's my question...

Doesn't it seem like lately, trance tunes have a half-life of sushi in a hot, humid sun??? I hate to use this analogy but to me, lately trance has become like porn - you've seen it once, twice, three times and then it's like "Bleh, move on". What I am saying is that after you get over the initial "excitement" (cough...cough) you start looking for "quality" - not just any track will do...

So, basically finding a perfect tune worth keeping/paying for becomes harder and harder [no pun intended ]. Seriously, just like porn - think of your initial reaction to just seing a boobie and then think about it now.. It's like, eh - seen it before nothing interesting. So, lately, for me - the tune has to be something special, something unusual...

What excited me about trance before was the unpredictability of the track... You don't know when it will hit you. But some tunes, after they hit you - the next time you listen is no longer the same. Like riding a rollercoaster - the second time around is not as exciting...
(Keeping my analogies drug free )

Some of the examples of those "Single-serving tunes" (c)CynepMeH, a Fight Club Member since 2001

1. Yet Another Day
2. I Believe (Nu NRG remix)
3. Castles in the sky <----(((blush)))

actually, many more....... Not that these tracks are not quality but what I am saying is that after the initial listen - they are no longer as exciting as before...

So, are we upon the era of "Disposable Trance"???

Humm... I'm not saying that its not hot/interesting anymore, but let me throw this one out for example:

I had this cd, Yellow - Stella . The first time I listened to it it was like "What the hell is this garbage?" I nearly threw it out of the window. But then, I listened to it a month later - only this time it was "Hmmm, this is not so bad", the third time I listened to it, I began to notice subtelties and appreciate it more. So, for me, some of the most favorite tunes have been aquired over time. With Trance, it seems, that we're looking for instant gratification. So the next time, some tracks are not as exciting as before.

Think abut PvD Rosemontags rave set, think about The Space Brothers - Everywhere I Go (Paul van Dyk Rework) track... The build-up: Classic... Just an aaaaaaamazing tune... You're going nuts, your typical "all hands in the air" track.... The next time you hear it, it's like, "Cool, but not as cool as the first time".

That was my point, and by the way, don't you have some porn in your collection that just looks lame and u nuke it??? Man, I just cleared up about 400MB of HD space by nuking "boring" porn.

I can hear cries already... Don't worry it was bunch of lame-ass screenshots from 80's porno flicks with chix that had Peggy Bundy hairdos and Rosie O'Donnel bodies...

its no secret that some trance is regressive, with the same old breakdowns and riffs and melodies from '99, and there is a market for formulaic pop-trance that is lapped up by radio/tv/Ministry of Sound etc...

but at the same time, there is the underground scene. DJs and producers who are taking the music forwards...

so if you think you're getting tired of trance, then look in a different direction...you might find something to you taste

I bet you're one of the people who'd go scuba diving with a box of matches, just in case you'd need to start a flame there as well...

I hear you, CynepMeH. Trance will die off unless it moves on. Right now predictability is killing the genre slowly.. I hate it as much as you guys but if trance doesn't move forward and producers dont pull up their socks, trance is headed the same way as pop.

Fact One: All music is based on patterns. That's because the part of your brian that interprets music will not like music which is not based on patterns.

Fact Two: Anything based on patterns is reasonably predictable.

So therefore: All music reasonably predictable. There is no genre of music which is not predictable, hence predictability can't be killing the genre. What you need to do, is listen to different genres, not just one or two, which will create the illusion of greater variety and allow you to appreciate each of them more for itself.

kinda backwards for me
so much trance out there that out ther that sometimes u miss some really good shit. sometimes it takes me 2 or 3 times to listen to a track to truly appreciate its uniquness and quality. I still listen to old stuff (aahhh classics) can't go wrong with them.

Is innovative music an oxymoron then?
Not every track/genre is equally predictable in my opinion.
predictable example: Dumonde - Can you dig it
surprising track: Moshic and Zidan - 10@Ze
predictable example: System F - Out of the Blue
surprising: James Holden - Horizon or in trance...free radical - surreal..or in psy almost every Infected Mushroom track.

Note: Predictability(?) does not necessarily make those tracks bad, in fact my favourite trance from the golden 99 era is pretty predictable..but it's indeed time to at least change the forumla here and there.
