making it big

is it possible to make it big in america ? i know you cant just DJ. you also have to produce.. so i guess the second part of my question is how does one learn how to produce? go to college for it? i was thinking of going to a music college but am curious as to what majors to look for.

everything comes from your hard and mind man. You can make it big without producing first, but with the time i think that all the djs end up producing.

I think BT went to Berkley institute of Music or something like that. Maybe he should go back and learn how to make quality music (ok sorry that's my one BT shot of the day )

get your hands on a computer + a musicprogram (like reason or fruityloops) and start from there.

also check out the productionpart of the forum, really usefull information there.

also any knowledge in musictheory is usefull but not a must (although it will make things a lot easier)

hmmm, might have forgotten something but there should be a "I wanna start producing"-thread somewhere in the prod. part

[edit]

ohh I totally forgot, have patience, will take like a year just to get it sounding good

i dj so iknow all about the 32 beats, and how something new happens every 32 beats, or 16 beats or 8 beats. isnt it kinda hard for a producer to create something new every 16 beats?

Not really... it doesn't really need to be a new melody or anything major, it can be some fx, a variation in a beat/melody or something like that.

Um well you can do courses on how to use various pieces of software or hardware, but at the end of the day if you dont understand MUSIC then youll never be able to produce anything worth listening to. I worked in a recording studio for a year or so and the amount of bad musicians that came in wanting to produce albums and demo tapes was shocking.

As to making it big in america, well i think the short answer is no. From what i've seen the american electronic music scene is a) small b) isolated to afew small areas of the country and c) completely different to the rest of the worlds idea of electronic music and how it shoudl be played.

At the end of the day, if youre producing stuff in america, chances are no one outside america will ever listen to it, and if you want to make it big in electronic music then you really have to crack the european/uk market. Take DJ Irene, supposedly one of the biggest DJ's in america, biggest hard house dj in the country. a) 9/10 european clubbers have never heard of her, b) any of them who listen to her music or listen to her play laugh when theyre told its supposedly hard house.

The bottom line is, if you want to make it big as a dj or producer, you need to be on the other side of the atlantic.

Not really, no, because when you're producing a track you know exactly how you want it to sound...
