I have not heard that term used however I can venture a guess. I am thinking they are refering to it start time which is dictated by its torque. So good direct drive decks have high torque and will "pickup" quickly. Meaning they get up to full speed very quickly after pressing start.

Nope, pickup means the cartridge with the needle.
