PC help (XP related)

Right, I was just sitting there, minding my own business, downloading a movie, chatting with the people on Oldo's hub and stuff, and then suddenly, this message pops up:

And I'm all like "WTF?" So I just sit there, let the computer restart, log in again and think that everything's fine. I start up all programs again, and not more than maybe a minute later it pops up again. I think "ok, once again and it should be fine". Restart, log in, message pops up. Now I started to get disturbed, and a little nervous too. I start Windows 98 instead of XP, and there's no problem. So it must be XP related.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be? Don't tell me the same thing it says on that picture, cause I know that already, thank you very much. What might have caused this, and how can I avoid it?

Being on Win 98 is not that bad, I mean I could have had only XP on the comp, then I would have been fuxx0red. The worst thing is I have all my mp3s on another HD, and it's NTFS, meaning I can't access them using Win 98, so I don't have anything to listen to

Any ideas are appreciated, cause I really don't know what to do..

have you got all the updates from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ? (if you have a slightly illegal copy of xp DONT get service pack 1 as this will check registration info, all other updates work fine) i remember seeing one update on the RPC thing. Also do you have a firewall running? if not www.zonealarm.com is a basic but effective one.

It looks like some hacker is exploiting a hole in windows, most likley all updates should fix it

I've had service pack 1 for quite long now, no problems. Haven't gotten any updates in a while tho.. Illegal copy of XP too, but with a working serial.

About firewall, I'm running Sygate Personal Firewall.

This is the first time it's happened. If you mean with DC++ then it happened the last time I started it. Maybe the time before that too, when I started it together with some other programs, like eMule. Doesn't have to have anything to do with it, it's just kinda suspicious..

BTW, I stopped some services in XP, as recommended in this thread, and now I can't log in to XP, cause I can't choose what user I want to log in as. What can I do to this?

go there - http://microsoft.com/technet/treevi...in/MS03-026.asp

towards the bottom is a link , get the windows xp 32 bit patch

this security alert was released around a month ago... looks like script kiddies have worked out how to use it now, the patch will solve it

i would never recomend disabling services, unless you know what your doing, the services one person needs are different from another persons. try logging into safe more, press F5 or F8 after the computer has completed the POST (power on self test) (when it checks ram etc) then try enabling all the services which where disabled, then follow the link and download the patch (which should also have been on windows update around a month ago)

All right, started using the last good know settings thingie, and I'm back on XP, downloading all necessary updates from Windows update plus the patch. Also started the services that I stopped. After I've done that, I will reboot and leave it on for a while, then maybe start DC++ to see if it works, just in case.

Updates will follow.

I was installing the updates, then it happened again. After the restart, I started to install the patch, but it didn't even start, because it had to restart again.

Now I have installed the patch and am installing the updates, and now it just popped up. Well, I didn't restart after I installed the patch, so maybe it will work after this restart..
