Just because so many people have basssline and kick questions, I am interested to know how long you guys typically take constructing the kick and the bass (including eq and everything)?

I typically 7 hours to sometimes working on it for 10 hours or more. I find that the better the kick and b'line the better the foundation and everything e.g. leads seem to fit on top of it nicely.

it often depends with each track i make, sometimes ill spend ages on it and other times itll just all fit together perfectly, although in other cases i go back and change it half way through the track

Well first I put the beat and percs down and then I build the bass around it so they both fit. The bassline is usually pretty quick to do once I get the beat to flow...

The bassline takes the probably the longest. I change the notes and instrument very often during a production. Finding the right kick so it's in harmony with the bassline is also challenging. I simply cannot settle for a generic offbeat (or any other variation of this)bassline ala PVD, sounds cheap and used more than a Thai whore.

Sometimes it literally takes five minutes, simply chuck in a kick, compress and eq it, then add a bass preset ive made, and program an off beat baseline. Done

Sometimes a simple off beat just works...

Other times, it takes me AGES, fiddling with the synth, layering kicks, eqing them, compressing them, etc, etc.

It really varies a lot!

if i have a basic idea of what my melody is going to be like, I usually work on that first and then I try to get a good sounding perc going and then I work on the bassline to try to make it fit the rest of the track...

otherwise, i just start with the percussion and then add the bassline and the rest of the stuff like everyone else

the bassline to me, is sort of the missing link between the melody and the percussion... it has a drive, but also usually has some sort of chordal musical component to it as well
