Computer for Producing

just a quick question... my current computer keeps slowing to a crawl after I add a limited amount of fx, synths, and vst's... I am getting a new comp and was just wondering if I should get one with higher processing speed or more RAM? I am currently looking at a 2.0 ghz with 512 RAM and I already got a good sound-card and etc...

That's a negatory. Ram is only used for loading samples, the fact you're dealing with VST's means that there wont be much sample loading (unless you're talking atmosphere, stylus, etc).

The faster the CPU the better.

If you're using Cubase you can bring up a window showing the CPU usage. Maybe other sequencers have this feature too? Otherwise, if you're using Windows 2000 or XP you can use the Task Manager to display CPU usage. Failing these, get a free utility to show your CPU usage.

At the end of this, if the CPU is constantly over 90% when you've got all your VSTs running, you need a faster processor. If the CPU is not maxed out, look for what else is causing the problem.

Processor Power! thats what slows down your comp to a crawl, not the RAM. You need the power to drive those softsynths and effects.

I got an AMD 2Ghz and 512 RAM, and my cpu usage in fruity studio 4 never exceeds 60, but I still get crackles and pops sometimes, I think its my soudncard, but its a decent one, Sonic Xplosion.

Up the latency on your card. The buffer is too low, which is why you're getting crackling.

Depends on your sequencer and card, in FLP its pretty easy to increase it, right under options.
