get Gruv-Glide!

after reading all the posts on this site about cleaning vinyl, I still wasn't sure how I should go about doing this. I ended up looking up a bunch of vinyl cleaning websites in Google, and after reading lots of different reviews, ordered some Gruv-Glide. this stuff is great, and helps keep fuzz and dust bits off records. also, if you buy some anti-static sleeves (paper sleeves w/ polyethylene lining), your recs will stay mostly dust-free after you store them.

a few places selling stuff:

hope this helps!

Just get some standard rubbing alcohol / surgical spirits. Then some cotton wool pads.

Put the turntable on 45rpm +8 (or whatever is the max).
Lightly dab the pad with the alcohol/spirts.
From the center of the record outwards, drag the cotton swap.

i use a lense cloth and distilled water (not as much static electricity or somethin to do with that)

works well with me

the vinyl doesn't pick up as much dust after. some when i get i clean with the distilled water right away to get rid of the huge static charge on the vinyl.

As mentioned above, there were plenty of threads not too many months ago regarding cleaning vinyl. I think that I even started one of them Gruv-Glide is a great product and it is IMO, the standard of products for cleaning vinyl.

If you don't want to buy this, then I would use 70% Isopropyl alcohol (the other 30% is deionized water). This is a standard bottle of rubbing alcohol that you can buy in any grocery store, hardware store etc. The most important thing to do is use a LINT FREE cloth. Don't use cotton balls like stated above because the cotton fibers can get caught in your groove and get burnt into your vinyl if the needle goes over it. Linen or silk work the best because both are very soft fibers and niether leave lint. Lens cloths are usually some mixture of these two. Stay away from cotton and polyester because they can scratch your vinyl as well as leave lint.

If you use rubbing alcohol, then don't soak your vinyl down, just use enough to wet the cloth and use your fingertip to drag the cloth from the inside of the vinyl (from the label) to the very outer edge. I personally put my speed up to 78RPM instead of playing with the pitch adjust. This isn't really that important, it just assures that you don't miss spots.

clean your vinyl before using gruvglide. gruvglide is great for protecting your vinyl by giving it antistatic properties but not great for cleaning. also, if used too much, it will build up (like wax) and you'll see that on your needles.

here's some great advise on vinyl cleaning. I've been pretty much doing this to all my vinyl, then gruvgliding it to protect it from static and dust: click

You could spend a quarter f the price that you would on grove glide of you just boutght lighter flid and a nice cleaning brush like the Stanton one. I was suprised when i heard about it but I read it in a book and it's true; Lighter fluid is a great anti-static.
