stack overflow, i had this problem at work today.. I didn't manage to get into a windows environment, it was just after the POST screen, I susspected a faulty CPU, imo it's a hardware problem. One of the 3 major components - (ram, cpu or mobo). I'll let you know in more detail when I get round 2 repairing this at work
edit: just re-reading your post, sounds like RAM - something (a vxd is a driver) is raping all of your ram, so it could possibly be sorted via software as apposed to my previously thought hardware. maybe you installed the wrong driver for something? is there anyway you can boot in safe mode and perform one of those xp 'system restore' thingys where it goes back to a previous date? (although I've been told that xp keeps it's drivers database - it doesn't revert back to an old one, just recovers files?) good luck either way
edit #2 - type msconfig in ur start / run box, go to startup and remove anything that you think would cause the lockup
